How long will it take for Celexa to kick in?!

Question: How long will it take for Celexa to kick in!?
I wouldn't say I'm super depressed but I am feeling sad lately, I am facing some major changes in my life and I have had a problem with anxiety but I feel like that is pretty much under control but I have been struggling with depression lately!.

It is my second day on Celexa and I was just wondering how long it took to kick in!. I read in my pamphlet I could start to notice good effects in as little as a week but my pharmacist said it could be up to six weeks!.

I'm not suicidal or anything, and I usually can talk myself out of my sadness using positive self-talk, but I felt like I needed something to help with the real lows!. Also, I can't eat much, and that started before I went on the meds!.

Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks :)!!!Www@Answer-Health@Com

hey there, well first off yay for you for seeking help and getting yourself on some medication (claps for you) celexa is a great antidepressant, when i started paxil i started to feel better in a few days, it all depends on your body, i know how bad it is to feel so sad and depressed and think you are never going to get better, but you will, trust me!!! in the meantime (i know this is hard) try to do something that you enjoy (which again i know is hard) put on happy music, watch a happy movie, go for a brisk walk, exercise if you can cause exercise increases endorphins that make you feel better and lift your mood!.!.!.!.!.!.try to eat foods that are good for you, stay away from sugars if you can!.!.!.!.eat protein like lean meat, chicken, turkey, fish, tuna, eggs, cottage cheese and good carbs like whole grain cereals, breads, pasta!.!.!.!.drink alot of water!.!.!.!.!.!.!.also go to the drugstore and buy omega 3 fish oil (longs you aren't allergic to fish) it has been shows that omega 3 oil helps depression (i take it myself) if you aren't allergic to fish you can also get krill fish oil which is even better and stronger than omega 3 oil and yes it is safe to take with your medication (i already asked) also take a high quality good multivitamin!.!.!.!.!.!.if you want to talk i am here for you, i have been thru this so feel free to email me at summerwind07044@aol!.com for reference i am a 43 yr old married woman :) remember depression feeds on itself so the more you focus on how depressed you are the more depressed you become so try to force yourself to get up and do something xoxoxo i wish you all of the bestWww@Answer-Health@Com

I take a real low dosage, 20mg!. I started it back in August, I think!. It took about 2 weeks for me to notice the difference!. Strangely enough, one thing that helps me when I'm feeling a bit down is to exercise!.!.!.as little as taking a walk or as much as going to the gym and doing a full-blown workout!.!.!.any physical activity usually helps me!. That might help you start to feel hungry as well!. I wish you the best of luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com

It took me about 2 weeks to start feeling it and about a month for it to really kick in!. I was on the lowest dose and I guess my body is more sensitive!. I liked Celexa a lot more than Paxil!. I was able to function better and think clearer on it!. My doc was really great with questions and very helpful!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Dear "sad GGG",

Celexa (citalopram!.!.!.generic name) is an SSRI!.!.!.Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitor!. It is an anti depressant in the same class as Prozac, (the first SSRI circa 1990), Paxil, Lexapro, (an updated version of Celexa) and many other medications that are SSRI's!. (There are also SNRI's, which stands for Serotonin Neurepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors like Effexor!.!.!.vanflexaine!.)

These are all relatively "new" drugs for anti-depression!. The key here is that every psychotropic medication has a unique effect on every different person!.!.!.in other words, Celexa will likely work for you in a different way that it does for anyone else!.!.!.like some people gain weight when taking it, some people lose; other people it makes nervous (anxious) others, it makes them sleepy and relaxed!.!.!.and so on!. This is unlike non-psychotropic (mood altering, mind effecting) medications!.!.!.!.!.an antibiotic, for example, almost always works the same on everyone killing the necessary bacteria, but with only minor side effects unless you are allergic to that medication!.!.!.!.very rare with today's antibiotics!

I like Deanna's answer because she describes how it works for her!.!.!.!.also answer about exercise, as it is the best way to get out of depression, although sometimes hard to do, just because you are depressed!.!.!.!.which likely means you don't want to do anything! If you have to, force yourself!.!.!.!.it's difficult, but you'll be so rewarded that you'll realize it's a low payment for such great "later" results!!

I have some concerns re: SSRI's!.!.!.!.just not enough research done about them, and every patient is really like a experimental rat to see whether it works at all for you or you need something different!. They now also agree that SSRI's have a withdrawal syndrome, like the "flu"!.!.!.and you can get your depression back, and the old anti-depressant won't help anymore!. Also, many people find that the drug effect wears off after a few months, and they have to switch to something new!.

Furthermore, drug companies are always into making a new drug that they can put a trade mark on!.!.!.they lose the right to that after 7 years!.!.!.like making Effexor XR, which is the same as Effexor, but is long lasting and therefore they can charge you more for it than when it becomes generic!. Fortunately, Celexa is now generic and you should get citalopram, as it is actually the same medication!.!.!.!.tested to be so by the FDA!.!.!.and it will save you tons of $$$$$$! The pharamacist or your dr!. may not tell you this!.!.!.unlikely as they both make big $$$ if you buy the trade name rather than the generic!.

In answer to your question, again everyone is different!.!.!.but it says on the labeling that it takes anywhere from 2-6 weeks to really start working, (part of that is just to cover their own butts, as if it doesn't start in 2 weeks, and they said it would they could get sued!)!.!.!.!.look for increased energy!.!.!.in fact, makes some people who are still depressed able to carry out their plans for suicide! (STOP USING THIS MEDICATION IF IT HAS THAT EFFECT ON YOU!) Then some changes, esp!., in the early morning when most people feel depression most, you'll start feeling better, and also the ability to go back to the things you used to love doing!.

Of course I'm no MD, and you need to talk these issues over with either him/her or a psychiatrist!. However, keep in mind they may have other motives ($$$$) in what they say! Sad, but true in this country!

So take it as prescribed!.!.!.!.probably between 20 and 60 mg!. per day!.!.!.stay active!.!.!.give it a couple of weeks, if you don't feel better go back to your doc!. (They'll likely attempt to raise your dose at first, and then change you to something else later if that doesn't become effective!.)

It's worse to be depressed than having any physiological disease, except mortal ones like cancer, heart problems, diabetes!., etc!.!.!.!.much worse than the flu, withdrawal from substances!.!.!.the worst part of that is the psychological part!.!.!.not the physical effects, as it may include depression, insomnia, etc!.

Depression usually is relatively short term!.!.!.well, if you call 6-12 months short! But YOU will get through this!.!.!.keep a positive attitude!.!.!.and go see a psychologist, your friends, and stay around people who love and care about you!. Don't use any other drugs!.!.!.even MJ can make you more depressed, and especially alcohol!.!.!.a depressant itself!

Good luck and email me if you have any other issues you'd like to discuss!. RogerWww@Answer-Health@Com

From my own experience of being on it twice, it takes about a month to start feeling the benefits!. A lot of people get frustrated and give up taking them because they take so long to kick in, but it's worth the wait!. They can really make you feel better!. In the mean time, just try and relax, take care of your self, have baths, read books, watch funny movies, keep your self busy doing something you like to do!. Make sure you get enough sleep as well-but not too much or it will drag you out making you feel like a pile!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
