Answers:
Unfortunately (or fortunately actually), I have been diagnosed as clinically depressed for most of my adult life!. I dealt with it, I am on the proper meds and I found a great psychiatrist who I've seen for most of that time (now about once every 4-6 weeks) and I'm in the best place in my life that I've ever been!. I'm in no way a professional; I'm only going to share my experiences about it!.

There are two main causes of depression: psychological and chemical!. My wife, who is a nurse, early in our relationship, encouraged me to seek help!. Though I have great respect for psychologists, they can only deal with the psychological issues!. A psychiatrist deals with both psychological issues and medical issues!.I highly suggest a psychiatrist!.

That said, it is very important to feel comfortable with the doctor!. Give them a chance, maybe one or two seessions but you won't necessarily find the right doctor on the first try!. It may be necessary to go through several until you find the right one!. But definitely go - it's REALLY important that you do!.

Also, you don't say about how old you are!. If you are a teenager, there are docs who specialize in child psychology and psychiatry!. Find someone who specializes in your type of need!.

And remember, if you are indeed a teenager, your body is really changing a lot, both physically and chemically!. You are also at "the age" when confidence issues are common!. But this doesn't mean don't go see anyone!. Absolutely go!. I'm just trying to explain some of this to you!.

As far as the body chemistry stuff, when I was much younger, I always believed that the less medicine you put in your body, the better!. But my wife, who is a nurse, explained to me that every person's body chemistry is different and that many times, the chemistry isn't normal enough to properly cope through life!. You could be playing with a short hand, so to speak!. Heredity plays an important role here!. Do you have a parent or sibling who is also depressed!? This could mean you are predisposed to this!.

Assuming you do need to take meds (and your doctor will be the one to determine this), imagine trying to cope psychologically without this help!. It's like starting a race so far behind that you have no chance to win!.

That said, from experience, I've found that there is a "proper" way to figure out what meds to take!. If you don't know, there are many different classes of drugs that could be helpful and again, it depends on your body chemistry!.

What my doc did was guess what type to start with, try a very low dose and after a given amount of time, got lots of feedback from me about how I felt after taking it!. There's also such a thing as a theraputic level, in other words, a level strong enough so your body will be affected by the medicine!. Anyway, after getting lots of feedback from me, he either increased the dose very gradually or went to a different type of drug!. This can be a LONG process - months, even years!. Eventually, they'll find something that might be helpful!. And that, combined with psychotherapy got me to where I am today - probably the luckiest guy I know!.

So:
1) find a (child) psychiatrist you really find easy to talk to and who seems to help you
2) if needed, go through the medical process to find what medication(s) might help
3) try to understand your body changes and all of the confidence stuff that goes along with being a teenager!.
4) after you've worked out the psychological and medical issues, you'll go on a "maintenance" routine like I am where you see the doctor every 4-6 weeks or whatever your doctor feels is appropriate!.

Good luck and I hope you get the same results I did!. It changed my life!.

Oh, and one last thing - OK, two last things!. First, remember you have friends and family!. Talk to them!. Tell them how you feel!. Don't keep it inside!. Confide in at least one person who you feel is supportive!.

Second, whatever problems you have now, they may seem brutal at this moment but give it time and eventually it won't seem quite as bad!. Time has a way of healing things!.:)Www@Answer-Health@Com
