Have you overcome...?!

Question: Have you overcome!.!.!.!?
If you have been getting help for your depression was there a moment where things seem to click and you started helping yourself to overcome it!? Was there a moment where everything your nurse/key worker said just drummed in your head and you felt you could fight this and help yourself!?

Could you explain what happened to you please!? What your thoughts were!? Did you wake up one day and just realised you could do this!?

I have asked this question before but didn't get many answers so thought i would try again!.

Just to let you know i am getting help but i wanted personal opinions on what happened to you!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Firstly, I am really sorry you are suffering from depression!. Most people suffer recurrent bouts in peaks and troughs until they are able to deal with what Churchill called for good reason 'the black dog' themselves!.

Secondly and perhaps controversally I believe that the only way to overcome depression is without medication or relying on taking on board what other people say!. The reason I say that is although a chemical imbalance may exist, I know from my own experience that our bodies, being the clever machines they are, can sort this themselves in time too!.

Moreover, once you go through the depression yourself and work it out for yourself, you then KNOW you got over it because YOU helped you through!.

Plus, perhaps the reason things have not clicked so far is because deep down, people have an idea of what is or is not right for them!. You can see this when you talk to people who do not know what to do - you might suggest something and they don't seem keen etc showing although they might not yet know the answers, they Do however know what they do not want to do!.

SO, if I was you, and this is just my opinion I would use the start of the new year to sit down and take stock!.

As daft as it sounds, I feel my own depression(s) were a great catalyst in my life and this is summed up by Oscar Wilde who said that 'although it does not make you a better man, becoming a deeper man is the priveledge of those who have suffered'!.

So, for a start, being depressed, you see the world differently to other people!. In some ways you see what is/is not important!. Use this unique perspective to finally get the peace of mind you need!.

Although most people with depression have reactive depression, that is, some terrible things have happened to them so it is wholly understandable they might feel like a black cloud is there with them all the time, it is not the depression which is the problem necessarily because if we were more resilient then the same things could have happened to someone else and they might not get depressed about it!.

Kind of like even when you cannot change your situation you can ALWAYS change your attitude towards it!.

Becoming aware of certain truths about life also help!. One is stop feeling unlucky, like your life is worse than anyone elses and stop believing that you are the exception, that for you things will never improve!.

No-one's life is easy!. Even millionaires must have relationships with others and relations with others are frought with difficulties, they also cannot escape ill health, death, bereavement and so on!. So as hard as your own woes are, in the great human experience you are not alone!. That is not to say that sometimes our own woes can paralyse us, ofcourse they can, but perhaps when that happens we feel bad for a reason and should spend time exploring those reasons rather than wanting a quick chemical lift or easy answer!?

So if it was me, I would think and write - you are depressed for a reason, so start writing at the beginning, write about everything that breaks your heart, write about all the things you have done or gone through which pain you - write write write!. Although it sometimes feels like you are in free fall, there IS only so long something can hurt, but sometimes going over and over it until it no longer does is a very effective way to overcome it!.

You may find that when you read back what you write (and you need never show anyone!) that you like all of us suffer when we are attached to something we want to be detached from (like a massive debt) or detached from something we want to be attached to (like a lover) etc

Also, take rest, lay up for as long as you need to complete the process, you will feel better eventually and will have learned skills to cope the next time life deals you a bad hand!.

I also once heard a parable (Taoist I think) about a farmer, he wakes up one day and his cow is missing - he thinks to himself 'what bad luck' - but when he later searches and finds the cow, a horse is with it and so he now has a horse and a cow and he thinks to himself 'what good luck'!. Then his son comes home from the army, rides the horse but breaks his leg and he thinks 'what bad luck' again - then war breaks out and because of the broken leg his son cannot go and he thinks 'what good luck' etc

The moral ofcourse is that if we just look at life events at the time or in isolation we tend to categorise them as good or bad - yet what is bad just now may in the long run get you to a really great place in a few months or years and if everything had not happened exactly that way then you would have not had that great thing!.

I also find that by comparison, I count my blessings!. So if you feel able start volunteering for those less fortunate, sure depression is an awful mental state, torture at times, but sometimes in giving we can see that we are blessed in ways we take for granted and because you have suffered too, you may even be able to offer them a shoulder too!.

So you hang in there, and every time you feel like throwing in the towel fight one more round!.

Eventually, learn to take the good and the bad in the same hand!.

Best of luck - gonna add another couple of quotes which for me had alot of meaning!.

You are strong girl, just weak just now under the strain, but you rest those emotional muscles and you will find they will in time get stronger every time you learn to flex them without outside help!.

****

'Laugh and the world laughs with you
Weep and you weep alone
For the sad old earth must borrow its mirth
But has trouble enough of its own!.'

*****

'A wise man in the storm prays not for the winds and the rains to go away, instead he prays for the strength to see him through!.!. it is the storm WITHIN which endangers him not the storm without!.'Www@Answer-Health@Com

When I realised that I was incharge of my life and no one else!. You have to make it for yourself!. Change the way you think, its hard work indeed!. And, once I started seeing changes, that I had made to my life and felt that proud feeling i started feeling better about myself, relationships, career and everything in between!.

Hope you beat your depression, just remember to take it one day at a time because it cant be a quick fix overnight!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I suffer from bipolar!. I will always have it, it does not go away!. But I have learned to live with it better!. I'm on lamictal a great medication for bipolar (if your not allergic to it) and I'm doing so much better then I was before, I guess I realized how much I have to be thankful for!.!.!.I still get outbursts, still get manic, still get depressed, But looking back to where I was then and where I am now, things are alot better!. I think getting married to the person I love helped alot!. Don't give up ever, things are going to get hard, no one can ever be perfect, even when things feel great, bad things could indeed come along!. Be strong, learn from your mistakes talk to your soical worker and know that time here is short, and you should make the best of it!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
