My brother in law is showing signs of a major change in personality. Could it be!

Question: My brother in law is showing signs of a major change in personality!. Could it be bi-polar!?
My bro-in-law used to be very compassionate, kind an gentle!. When he hit his 40's (he's 49 now), he became totally different!. He makes huge issues out of nothing, he is controlling, he holds grudges agains people, family, neighbors, etc!. for no reason at all!. He once spit on an uncle and his wife for not acknowledging him right away at a family function a YEAR EARLIER!. See!? He held this grudge so long!.
He once refused to come to a dinner at our house, because I didn't point to him specifically when I made a "blanket" inviation to the entire family at a gathering!.
He won't listen, he takes revenge on others!. He once was mad at another brother and took the brother's wife's hang dry clothes from the line in their backyard and through them in the dirt and stepped on them!. Why!? Because a brother told his son to stop kicking the ball so hard against their "shared" fence!. It was breaking the wood!. That made him furious and take revenge!.
He is now controlling all of the guests that come in and out of my mother in law's house!. What is the most bizarre is that he is entertained by stirring up trouble between the family!. He tells stories about the nieces and nephews and is really entertained to watch them get in trouble with their parents!. He has lost all of his friends and is now losing all of the family as well!.
Everyone in the family is staying quiet because he did cocaine in the 80s and they don't want him to get "sick" again!. I think he has a personality disorder!.
Do you think it's medical!? He has diabetes!. Do you think he is spoiled and abusive (but he wasn't that way before) or is it a result of some kind of health issue!. He has really begun to age these past few years!. He's 49, but looks 59!. I would really like your opinions and advice!. Please don't say to sit down and talk to him!.!.!.that doesn't work!. We tried and he hit one of his brothers and said some really terrible things!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I'm not trained in mental health but have had some exposure to family members with bipolar and what you've described does not sound like typical bipolar like behavior!.

Also bipolar tends to become apparent in a persons 20's!. Check out this website for signs and symptoms!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I'm really curious why you would think this is bipolar!? Where did you get the idea that if someone is an a$$hole they are bipolar!. Seriously I am really curious!. I am bipolar and not angry, not controlling, not malicious etc!.!.!.!.!. neither is anyone else that I know who is bipolar!. Where on earth did this erroneous stereotype come from!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

I think this could be one of a few things!.!.!.is it possible that he could be on drugs now without anyone knowing!? I am currently a recovering opiate addict and that behavior hits close to home!.!.!.i was an energetic athlete in high school!.!.very pretty and popular as well i was well liked and was always happy!. Around the time i started college i started drugs at first it didnt have much affect but eventually it took over my life and changed me!. I became something i wasn't i would snap at any little thing someone said to me or feel sooo unloved if i wasn't acknowledged!. i would cause problems between myself and others or just between people i knew in order to take the heat off my problem!. I became violent and miserable!. Being an addict is something you battle for the rest of your life, and if your not strong enough to fight it; it will take over again!. Is it possible people are looking the other way because they fear that he is using again!?

You also said this started happening in his early 40's!? It could be a mid-life crisis,or depression brought on by not feeling like he has done enough in life!?!?

Either way i think the best thing to do is an intervention*!.!.!.i know it's not what you wanted to hear but i think it's the best thing to do!.!.!.
Gather together everyone who cares about him and tell him that, maybe show a family video of him when he was a happier person!. I feel that no matter how sad or mad i was; when i realized how many people loved and cared about me i couldn't wait to go back to my normal life!. If you don't talk to him you will never know for sure how he feels and if you don't know that how can you change anything!?!?

*interventions are not just for drug addicts!.!.!.they are for anyone who needs help, you could try with just family and friends, or seek a professional's help*

Good Luck and Hope everything gets better!Www@Answer-Health@Com
