It probably has to do with brain develpment!. There is a huge change in brain function that happens through the teens and early 20s, transitioning the brain from child functioning, to adult functioning!. Durring childhood synaptic connections are formed!. Thoughout the teen/young adult years, the brain does away with unnessessary synaptic connections!. This is assosiated with why it is much easyer to learn many things as a child, then it is as a teen or adult!.!.!.!.!.!.like languages for example!.

I have read somewhere that it has been considered that schizophrania, for one example, may be associated with these synaptic connections, and incorrect connections being made!. Which once the excess connections are done away with, the incorrect ones would be more apparantWww@Answer-Health@Com

I'm sure it has to do with the fact that at about 18 to 21, your Brain has finally reached maturity!. After that your brain starts to loose brain cells little by little, so most people that get schizophrenia do so at this age of 18 to 21 or so!. But I have a close friend who got it in his late 30's When he was a young adult, he had 2 different brain injuries for a motorcycle wreck and a jeep wreck!. His doctor thinks after that things in his brain layed dormant until lots of stress brought them out!. His schizophrenia is also on the mild side and is almost completely controlled by medication!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I agree with the above comment about brain development!.

I think things suddenly appear now because how cruel the world is to us at any early age and so you react!. (depression, anxiety)

I have been diagnosed quite a few things and now my 14 year old is battling depression and self infliction!.

One year ago she was diagnosed bi-polar, by two doctors, a third said no!. Now they say borderline personality traits!. Her psychotherapist says until her brain is fully developed will not state disorder but treat her for depression and her mood swings!. If this is the practice of all doctors then people may have traits of schizophrenia, but not diagnosed until their brain is developed!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Sometimes its in the family blood!. But with parents, family supports and right guide of a doctor I think it can be correct at the early age!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

They don't!. You can develop them way earlier--I was 9 when I had my 1st suicidal thought--or much later!. It's just an average age!. It's not set in stone!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
