St Johns Wort contains a chemical called Hypericin that leaks out of the crushed flower as a red pigment. It is this chemical that acts as an anti-depressant. The problem with using the flowers and leaves in a tea is that the amount of hypericin is not regulated. Some plants contain more, and some less depending on how they're grown, dried and packaged.
I would recommend caution; maybe start with one cup a day for a week and then evaluate how you feel after that. It is a misconception that simply because it's a herb it can't harm you. This is NOT true, so be careful. You can get St Johns Wort in pre-made capsules or tablets which at least have a specific and quantifiable amount of active ingredient.
