Do I have Schizophernia?!

Question: Do I have Schizophernia?
I'm really scared I have schizophernia. I hear things at night, Like the TV on in the next room but when I go to investigate it's off. I have never had any delusions or paranoid thoughts. These noises I hear are mostly at night. My brother has schizoaffecive and I'm scared to death I'm getting it. Please help! I'm suicidal over this! Also, I'm too scared to tell anybody about this. Will they put me in the psych ward at the hosptial!?

Answers:

It does not need to be schizophrenia exactly, but you do seem to have psychotic features of some sort. Since a lot of mental illnesses are genetic in nature, and your brother already having been diagnosed with the disorder with both psychotic and affective features (either bipolar or depressive), and you having suicidal thoughts, it points me out to believe you might be developing (not that it is ANY of your fault!) something very similar to that.

Also, psychotic features can be present within a severe major depression or either phase of a bipolar disorder, but the main difference between those and the schizo-affective disorder is that in the latter, psychotic features are not reserved only to the periods of depressed, manic or mixed mood episodes, but can also occur at any other time, even when you do not have any of your affective disorder symptoms. Which is not the case with major depression and bipolar disorder; psychotic features can occur only within the current mood episode.

And usually, psychotic features that can appear in depression and BD are of the mood disordered nature-i.e. believing you can fly in the manic state and thinking you're financially ruined and have lost everything in depressive phase, when that is actually not the case.

Also, both bipolar disorder and schizophrenia have the peak developmental time at around age 20 or early twenties (bipolar can also begin in childhood/early teens, which is very rare for schizophrenic features). So you also might take that into an account.

In any case, I encourage you to seek proffessional help from a psychiatrist, especially since you're saying your suicidal because of it and that you find it disturbing. Therapy and medication can bring about a lot of relief, and even if you end up being diagnosed with something of the sorts, remember that you're still the same person, the disorder is not what defines you, and the stigma around mental illnesses is grounded on nothing but pure ignorance, lack of knowledge or care and empathy from other people!

So try to stay strong and remember that it all can be treated very well, and that you can lead a "normal" productive happy life!

Best of luck to you and your brother! ;)

Interested in psychiatry and how the brain works in general, so research it quite a lot online. Also have bipolar myself (without psychotic feature, though).

Are you sure you're not dreaming?

Because I do have a vivid memory back when I was a child when one night, I could hear the phone ringing but when I look at it, nothing. And then I could hear the toilet seat banging.

At a hindsight now that I am quite a grown-up, I am quite convinced that those are just dreams. To be honest I thought that those were real but now I no longer think so since I understand that I'm quite a lucid dreamer. Besides, it only happened once. But still, it was quite so vivid I still can't forget it 10 years later.

I could just tell you not to worry because you'll outgrow having those dreams but if you say your family has history of it, then you might want to tell your parents.

Well I am a Schizophrenic and I have not ended up at something like a Psych Ward. But it sounds like you may be so scared you have it that you may have it. I would recommend looking into your local Doctor or whoever where you live looks in into that type of stuff. And there is no reason to be suicidal over it unless that was a figure of speech. You may also be paranoid over something.

Talk with your Doctor. He or she can determine if what you are experiencing should be diagnosed and treated. Unless you want to harm yourself, or others, you will not be placed in the hospital.

Call the Boys Town National Hotline at 1-800-448-3000, if you need to talk. We have trained counselors available 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Not only can we provide a listening ear, support and advice, but we can also assist in finding resources in your local area, if needed. You can also talk with a counselor on our chatline at www.YourLifeYourVoice.org, Monday-Thursday from 8 p.m.-11 p.m. CST. Please take care of yourself and know we are just a phone call or click away.

Take care,
Counselor AH

Do you have a fan on? Or your computer running with a loud fan noise?

The white noise a fan makes, or anything similar making white noise can make it sound like people are having a muffled conversation just outside your door. It's happened to me before a few times.

Your brain is trying to make sense of the noise and creates random noises in your head... Or something like that.

Go to a psychiatrist/ psychologist for a diagnosis. It is confidential and you don't have to tell anybody else about it. They will not put you in a psych ward unless you admit yourself, or are harm to yourself or others.

You need to see a doctor.

first and most importantly: DO NOT BECOME SUICIDAL OVER THIS.
so many people out there devote their lives to learning about the brain and our behavior and perceptions and they want to help you, so let them. i think you need to talk to a psychiatrist/psychologist. they will be able to help you figure out if you have schizophrenia and what you should do about it if you do or if you dont.
all schizophrenia is is that your body has too much of the neurotransmitter dopamine..you can get medicine to inhibit some of this dopamine if you do have this condition.
if you do not have it, a psychiatrist can help you talk through your problems and get to the root of these feeling your having. get to the bottom of this paranoia before it gets to you any more.
whatever you do, one thing i know will help is if you try to relax. you are better than these delusions and thoughts you are having, dont let them get the best of you. listen to your favorite music, take a hot bath, try exercising (releases endorphins or"feel-good neurotransmitters), whatever it is that you enjoy doing. take your mind of this and relax. do not think your world is ending, this is a temporary stage you are going through and will get through.
good luck, i really hope this helps and please dont consider suicide. you will get through this and one day life will be great and you will be so thankful to be alive. do not deprive yourself of that experience.
also how do you think your brother would feel and how would it affect HIS mental health if you took your life.

personal experience and the neurotransmitter info is because im taking a psych class in school.

Talking to someone will help you whether you are scared or not. trust me, i used to hear voices and i have never been to the psych ward but i was put on medications that would help me to stop hearing things. Be careful who you tell though because if you tell someone who is a social worker or someone who is working at a hospital they may get the wrong idea. If you are not an adult yet they must have permission of your parents before they would ever send you to an institution or a psych ward. hope this helps.
