anxiety sufferers - how do you cope?!

Question: Anxiety sufferers - how do you cope?
I find myself reliving past hurts/embarrassments/frustrations/failur… etc and beating myself up over them. I also find I get mentally stuck on some things and can't stop thinking about them - I worry and fret.

eg - I worry about my childrens' health - probably a little too much (a bad bruise might be leukemia etc). I get frustratied when I don't just fall straight into the job I want (even though I know it's a highly competitive field and you need years of experience to get in). I worry that I'm not good enough and have to actively stop my negative self talk and assumptions that others think I'm no good. I'm always thinking - not necessarily ALWAYS negative/anxious thoughts - but I'm always thinking of SOMETHING.

I just wonder what ppl who suffer from anxiety like this do to cope?

thanks!

I know how you feel! mine gets so bad i can't breathe sometimes and the first thing you need to do is stop yourself in your tracks and ask yourself "so what?". Rationalize what you are thinking - if for example you are worried about your child's bruise think to yourself - has he/she fallen over recently? Have i seen more than this one recently? If it doesn't clear up you can take him to the doctors and let them have a look at it, problem solved.
For negativity I had to do Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) which i'm still doing and it seems to be working really well, its all about changing they way you think about something and then changing the actions that result from that thought, it can be expensive if you do it as a course, but there are loads of self help books and cd-roms available.
Hypnotherapy can also help - again it can be expensive if you go to a professional so i would recommend you google 'self hypnotherapy' and look on the ehow guide that pops up - its all about the power of suggestion and learning to empty your mind of negative thoughts.
You could try making a list when you feel anxious - put down everything that is bothering you on one side of the list, and on the other put down how you can beat it - having a logical solution handy really does help put your mind at rest. And finally take a deep breath!

Many eventually realise that life is too short to waste on negativity and unhappiness. Only you can choose happiness and it is not easy. Why live a wasted life so get out and do something. It doesn't particularly matter what you do, in the long run, but you must start somewhere!

For me it's a combination of medication and therapy. Therapy helps me understand and change the way I think. Medication helps calm down my overactive system. I feel together they are doing wonders for me. I'm far from perfect but far from where I used to be too.

You gotta get some mood stabilizers. They can work wonders in these situations.

They worked for me.

You know, I deal with the same thing a lot, and I never considered the fact that it may be anxiety (though I do recognize that I have a great deal of social anxiety). I still dwell on embarrassments from 10 years ago.

Generally, what I use to cope is a channel for the emotions. My particular one is video games, but any that fulfills the same requirements will do. It just needs to be something that allows you to escape from reality for a little while, it could be anything like exercise or watching your favorite TV program, or whatever.

As far as worrying about your children's health, I can't say that I can really relate since I don't have children, but I can say that it is easy to over-react to perceived health issues. The only advice I can offer in a situation like that is to remember that the human body is very resilient, and can stand a lot of punishment and still repair itself. As long as your children see a doctor for any major pain, they'll be fine.

In general, though, for most anxiety it's good to just have an escape. It'll help deal with any problems that come up until the next time you can administer another dose of escape.

* Make a list of things that you worry about.
* Set aside 15-30 minutes every day as a "worry time" and spend that time intentionally worrying. This especially helpful if worry keeps you awake at night.

It is also helpful to breathe slowly, regularly and deep (about 5 secs in, and 5 secs out) during your worry time, so you can think more clearly. Try to plan solutions instead of worrying.

Or take an e-learning stressmanagement course with biofeedback tools of Heartmath. Their technique learns you how you can change your worries and frustrations into positive feelings and this quiets your mind and improve your feelings of well-being.

First thing to do is decide that you are not going to "cope" and "manage" anxiety. You are going to get rid of it - and fast. As for how, there are many ways, CBT was the only thing that helped me.

This is an article about it, hope it helps:

If you suffer from anxiety and panic attacks or depression, you probably heard "CBT for anxiety" mentioned many times. What is cognitive behavioral therapy? Why are there so many people talking about it? How can it permanently stop anxiety and panic attacks? This guide will answer all of these common questions.

What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?

CBT for anxiety is a form of therapy that concentrates on 2 connected things: Your cognition (your thoughts) and your behavior - your actions. You probably know that the way you think determines how you feel and the way you feel determines your actions and behavior. This is a "closed cycle" because your actions also influence how you feel.

You may not realize it, but your actions can create and elevate bad feelings.

Cognitive behavioral therapy teaches you how your thoughts and beliefs affect your feelings and how to change the way you think to eliminate bad feelings altogether.

How Can CBT Eliminate Your anxiety Attacks?

Most of us think that the situations we encounter and our everyday experiences are the triggers to anxiety, panic and depression. If you are driving your car, for instance, and when you get on a highway you get an anxiety attack, you probably think that your anxiety is caused by driving getting on the highway. This in not true. According to CBT, your thoughts and set of beliefs determines the intensity of your emotions.

Cognitive behavioral therapy gives you simple techniques to stop panic and anxiety attacks dead in their tracks.

CBT is the only method that is able to cure anxiety and panic disorder permanently because it uses scientifically verified strategies to relieve anxiety for a long term. Other popular treatments - like medication, herbal remedies, breathing exercises and more - usually treat anxiety symptoms only and don't treat the root of the problem - Your brain and the way you think!

Although there are pharmaceutical drugs that are used to control anxiety disorders, not all are successful, and many produce unwanted side effects, including neurological damage, impotence, major weaknesses and addiction. There are things you can do to reduce anxiety in a much safer manner. To find out more about CBT for anxiety go to http://no-more-panic-today.com - Right now!
