How helpful is Ativan as sleep aid..?!

Question: How helpful is Ativan as sleep aid..?
Hi, am a 23 years old student of higher education and I have been getting very little sleep for the past two weeks and some days I just cant sleep to a recent emotional trauma.
My doctor recently prescribed 1mg ativan to be cut in half and taken twice daily. The first night of taking this I slept although I woke up abt 4 hours after and found it a bit difficult to go back to sleep.

Then next day I took it again but didnt sleep in the night at all.

I had previously taken diazepam which enabled me to be able to sleep at nights but he doesnt want me to have long term side effects from it.

Any advice here?

Answers:

I've taken Ativan and other benzodiazepines for sleep. They work good for awhile but the problem is you will quickly build up a tolerance to them and you will need to take more and more to get the same effect plus they can become addicting if you take them long enough. I take Trazodone myself. There are better meds out there that will help you sleep. Good luck :)

Ativan is highly addictive and is usually only supposed to be taking for short periods of time. Trust me when I say this. My advise is to you would be to get lots of exercise, cut out caffeine products, and take breaks from studying. Get out side at least 15 mins a day for sunshine and fresh air. My dr had me on Ativan 2 mg ones with 90 in al bottle, I would missuse them and go for about 3 days not having a clue what I had done when I came to one day on the side of a three lane rode when the emts came to get me I was laughing and I apparently tried to walk and fell. I could have died. I now take kolonopins as prescribed they are long acting benzodazifens and I don't get "high" off them. I was recently in the hospital and they gave me two injections of ativan to sleep, and it just made me spacy. Your body will build up a tolorance to the medication and you will need more and more of it. that is why I would not use it for too long.
