Question: POLL: Do you (think) you have mental illness and do drugs/alcohol/nicotine?
I'm curious because I have M.I. and I have some habits.
I participated in a university study and she admitted that her studies showed that ppl who had mental illness were several times more likely to abuse drugs, prescription medicines, or smoke. A bit more conversing and she further admitted that there was a link between schizophrenia and drug use. She said it went both ways (was caused by/could cause schiz). I hear lots of claims made by non-medical people about things. So when she said that, it made me think of asking people.

Right up until a few minutes ago, I was talking about the same thing with some friends.
When, however, come into play the contrast between scientific, documented, and the value of thought and analysis, it is difficult to find a universally accepted answer.
I think your question reflects the characteristics of encouraging a discussion rather than finding a solution.
