Wrong diagnosis? Please help me?!

Question: Wrong diagnosis? Please help me?
I have thought for a while I may hAve paranoid schizophrenia. I have most of the
symptoms- paranoia, delusions, hallucinations, hearing voices, fatuige, headaches, blank facial expressions, bizarre thoughts and more.
However, over the last few weeks I have been seeing a couceller. She said to me today she thought I may have aspergers an descibed to me the symptoms which I agreed sound like me. However when I went home an looked at them online they don't seem likeme at all and the ones she said weren't on there.
Can I trust her? Could schiophrenia be misdiagnosed as aspergers? Is she some lady working with the people who are to get me? I need help please! P. S I'm 15 and a girl

Please be very careful!

A counsellor has no business making diagnoses! It is outside of their remit. It is actually quite irresponsible to do that. Leave your diagnosis to your psychiatrist. That is their speciality and what they are trained to do.

Your counsellor may have meant well but it would be unwise to act upon her suggestions regarding your diagnosis. It is possible that your counsellor has some experience with Aspergers Syndrome and there can be some similarities, the two conditions could even co-exist, but the treatment is different. (People with Aspergers do not typically hallucinate and are not deluded)

If you are taking medication for your condition please do not change it. Your counsellor may never have seen you without you being on your medication. Your medication may have the effect of masking your actual condition meaning that your counsellor cannot see what is hidden.

I don't know if you have Asperger's, but it's a form of Autism Spectrum Disorder. It does seem more like you'd have paranoid schizophrenia in which case you're lucky because most people don't think they have a problem and usually don't take medications properly (ever seen A Beautiful Mind?) If you want to learn about someone with Asperger's, Glenn Gould was a famous piano player that had it. He was a very particular person, always wore gloves and had strange quirks, and was somewhat antisocial. Let your counselor know about what you're thinking, because you probably need medication along with therapy.

I don't think she is "some lady working with the people who are to get me?" but also thinks it seems more likely that you have schizophrenia than Aspergers. I think that you might need to get a second opionion.
You could also write out information on both and make notes what symptoms that fits you and which don't and bring those papers as a starter for a discussion.

Yes, schizophenia is often misdiagnosed as Asperger's Syndrome.

lol yes u can trust her. but trust urself more! if u don't like what she said tell ur parents u want to see someone else. Maybe you have both issues?

Have you seen a psychiatrist (an MD who can write prescriptions and specializes in things like mental illness)? Whether it turns out to be paranoid schizophrenia, Asperger's Syndrome, or depression, you need to seek the advice of a psychiatrist.
I have Asperger's and the symptoms you listed, except for the blank facial expressions, don't sound like Asperger's, but I can't say for sure. You do need to see a psychiatrist for a full evaluation. I can say with a lot of confidence (but I am not a doctor) that you would have shown symptoms of autism before now. Most of the time there are signs as a young child. For example, I didn't start speaking until I was 3 years old. I also struggled both academically and socially in school, although many people with Asperger's do succeed academically in school. I had very few friends, I can't look people in the eye when I talk with them, I was picked on A LOT at school, but most of the time didn't even realize it. People with Asperger's and other forms of autism usually stick to formal talk and have a hard time engaging people in conversation. Autism is a neurobiological disorder. There are A LOT of other symptoms that I have not included because it is a disorder that is very very complicated, and, if you add ADD, depression, anxiety issues, and a significant history of suicide in your family, it becomes even more complicated.
Lastly, Asperger's Syndrome isn't a mental illness like schizophrenia and depression, although sometimes people think it is. Different mental illnesses can have similar and overlapping symptoms. Researching on the internet is a good thing, but there is a lot of wrong, invalid information and websites out there, so please be careful about what you read.
