Am I showing signs/symptoms of Mania? Could I be suffering from it?!

Question: Am I showing signs/symptoms of Mania? Could I be suffering from it?
I am aware that Yahoo Answers isn't the best place to ask this, and wont be a replacement for my doctor, but I felt I would ask this to see what other people think anyway.

Last Saturday my parents noticed that I had been very quiet and reserved. On that day I was generally feeling cold, distant, observant and perhaps you could say 'philosophical'. I wouldn't say I felt depressed, but just a little realistic. However, from Sunday up to today, I've been showing signs that sound awfully like Mania. I've had an extremely elated mood, even leading to laughing fits for apparently no reason. I've been more irritable than usual, generally more talkative (considering I am normally very quiet in social situations) and my speech has been quite rapid. I've also been becoming increasingly distracted and amazed by sensory input, including the feel of things and visual patterns. I have, however, for the most part been able to keep my self restrained in social situations, although today I did find I was letting myself slip and acting out of normal.

So, what do you think? Am I showing signs and symptoms of Mania or something else? Or am I just fine?

Thank you,
Jacob.

I won't go into the whole mania/depession termonology because that would take forever since mania and depression effects people in different ways showing a ray of symptoms.

What I will say is you have obviously you have noticed a substantial difference in your mood compared to how you usually are (quiet, reserved, cold, distant) to feeling (elated, irritable and distracted) amongst other things that you are discribed above. And I would suggest seeing your GP for an opinion and perhaps writing down what you have expirenced might make things abit easier what do you think?

It's often easy to say there is 'no reason for me to be feeling like this' but mania and depression can be triggered by stressful events, biological, genetics etc and it might be worth looking into wether anything as happened recently to make you feel suddenly like this so you can change anything that might be causing it.

You mention also that you have managed to self-restrain these difficult feelings in social situations but then today let it slip alittle perhaps this is something you can also talk to your Dr about. Mania can get worse without treatment either gradually or suddenly so do try to make an appt as soon as possible. He will then might either refer you to the mental health team or put you in touch with other services.

You reading too much into this. Trust me you're fine, everyone needs to blow off steam, and it's purely psychological. You seem like a sweet kid so don't over-analysis yourself looking for an answer.

if you got mania in no way would you be sitting wrinting this question in rational way...just because we sometimes change our moods or way we are for no reason makes us human not ill

You're right, Yahoo Answers isn't the best place, a evaluation usually doesn't take long and is fairly cheap, but I can see where you would want to seek advice before taking that step.

The realistic, philosophical mood is very normal and it usually comes on from basically thinking to much. Sometimes it can be a symptom of anxiety or mild depression/sadness, but is usually not alarming to be "low." The elation however is a little less common but it's very normal to be in a good or happy mood, it usually isn't as normal if it is elation. Elation can happen no doubt, but it usually doesn't last long.

Think about how you really feel. I know it's hard to tell sometimes, but really think about it. Bipolar is marked by a imbalance of emotions. If you find yourself going from one extreme to the next, I would highly suggest an evaluation for Bipolar.

I've experienced mania before, and this sounds a lot like it but very mild.
Have you tried to tackle any big projects? One of the biggest signs of mania is trying to do big things, like writing a novel or reorganizing your whole house. You feel invincible....on top of the world. If this is the first time you're experiencing these symptoms, then I wouldn't worry about it. Everyone gets a little manic once in a while, it doesn't necessarily mean you have a mental illness. Your mania doesn't sound severe at all so don't be worried. Be on the lookout for this in the future though, if you experience it again maybe you should consider seeing a doctor. Feel better<3

I'm bipolar and I experience manic episodes frequently.
