I got an appointment with an addiction therapist.. Only problem.. we went to hig!

Question: I got an appointment with an addiction therapist.. Only problem.. we went to high school together?
I am 24 years old and have an addiction to prescription meds, so I'm taking the steps in getting help. I contacted an addiction center yesterday and they gave me an appointment for Next Monday with an addiction therapist.. and I think I went to high school with her.. We weren't best friends or anything, but we spoke and there's nothing bad between us.. I sent her a message on Facebook asking her if she works for this place.. and if she does.. should I cancel and ask for someone I don't know ? I hope she'll answer before next Monday

It's a really difficult one. Personally, I think you'll find it easier if you contact the centre and ask for a different therapist - you can explain that you knew each other in the past and you'd like a 'clean space' (as we call it in the trade!). As a psychotherapist, I would never work with someone I've known in another context. Addiction therapy, being more behaviourally focussed, is a bit different, but I still think you'll find it infinitely easier to work with someone who knows nothing of you to start with and doesn't know anyone you know.

I would say that decision is sort of up to you. Would you feel uncomfortable talking to someone you know about this? She is going to be there to help you and like all doctors she would be bound by privacy laws, so she wouldn't tell anyone anything about your case. If you feel like it would be too weird for you, then I would go ahead and make an appointment somewhere else.

I'm telling you, you will probably feel uncomfortable. I have gone to therapy with my kids and alone for about 20 yrs, with different therapist. Different ones, because when you're in an agency, they will move on.
They are human, and even though they are bound to privacy, you will always have trust issues with them. Trust issues are issues that clients have anyway with their therapist to start off with...knowing her from the past is going to make it much worst. We worry what their thinking of us and a lot of other things. Think about it first.

if the thought of seeing as a counselor someone you went to school with makes you uncomfortable then see someone else. bear in mind though that she cannot tell anyone at anytime what you talk about or even that you are her patient. if she does she can lose her license.

She SHOULD have a sence of profesionalism because that is her job ...why not try If it makes you uncomfortable then don't come back and change the therapist....going to therapy is nothing to be ashamed off :)

You act as what your heart tells you too. - It does not necessarily mean anything bad with visiting a professional you knew since earlier.

It might be better to work with a therapist you do not know

No, if she was the smame person she only trying to help

if its some one u know its better it makes it easier to give up

If you went to the trouble to ask that question on here then you must be worried about it?

I would think you should see someone else unless it would slow down the process for you to get help. I would not think you could be totally honest with her if you needed to be.

Prescription drugs are a serious problem and you do not want anything that can get in the way of you seeking help.

Good luck

My nephew is going through his 3rd re-hab stint with Oxi and they finally go some serious issues out of him that he was keeping inside that nobody knew about.
