Am I starting to lose my mind?!

Question: Am I starting to lose my mind?
It has been awhile since this last happened, and I thought it was just a thing of the past. However I was just sitting here listening to some music on pandora and browsing the net and then all of a sudden every single noise I would hear would aggravate me, the music, the sound of me clicking my mouse or striking the keys. My heart started racing a bit and I got a little bit of a pain in my chest and my vision got a little blurry for just a few seconds.

Like I previously stated this has happened a few times before and they always last different lengths from a few seconds to about 10 to 15 minutes I would say. Basically I am just wondering if this is something I should be worried about and possibly see a doctor, or if there is just some way I can prevent this from happening again. At first when I got the chest pain I thought heart attack, but realized that sounded sort of silly being that I am only 21 and have a fairly healthy diet and the fact that I am here typing this now. Any input or suggestions would be much appreciated, thanks.

Or it could be hyperacusis or recruitment, audiological conditions which cause changes in sensitivity to sound and cause substantial stress.

Hyperacusis - change in threshold of sensitivity to sound within a particular frequency range or character group (e.g. people get highly stressed by sound of people eating or somesuch)

Recruitment - sudden increase in loudness usually a consequence of hearing damage where hair cells either side of damaged area are borrowed (i.e. recruited) to make up some of the function - unlikely in a 21 year old unless you have been subject to extensive loud music, personal headphones, loud work environment, etc.

I have central hyperacusis, which means that the change in my sensitivity threshold is a neurological condition, rather than a middle or inner ear condition. Not too long ago it used to cause extreme anxiety, feeling of racing pulse, hot flushes, unsteadiness, lack of co-ordination, etc. etc. - typical panic attack symptoms. Hey, when I was very young I used to think it was God coming to punish me...a measure of how stressful it is.

An attack sounds exactly as you describe and, in my case, usually happens when I am tired.

I would see your doctor and eliminate the possible - general hyperacusis, recruitment and hearing damage can be clearly identified by audiological testing and examination without medication. The doctor can also review and assess your history for stress and anxiety.

If you are particularly, stressed, anxious, medically-depressed or affected by separation or trauma then these could well be panic attacks, but they should not be left untreated. If one of the symptoms of repeated attacks is hyperacusis (rather than vice versa) then you could well develop a hyper-sensitivity to sound, which would make life all but intolerable.

Now I comfort myself with the fact my condition is known and untreatable (strangely liberating) and I can hear everything! :)

A joyful personal experience to add to my weird brain issues

No you are not. It was panic or anxiety attack which can happen at anytime, anywhere to anyone. You don't have to be doing something stressful to have one at any moment. No one is prone to heart attacks, so don't think you can't have one because you are only 21. You may want to see a professional for a diagnosis and some help.

Hrmm...I've heard of something like this before, when people were so aggravated by any sound it affected them physically. Going to search google and hopefully be back with a thorough answer.

ADD: I searched 'noise causing panic' and just got a whole bunch of forums of people who have the same problem as you, but no name or solution. Sorry :/

it sounds like a panic attack honestly, but if you're really worried see someone.

sounds like a panic / anxiety attack just carry on as normal and IGNORE it just let it pass it will soon go xx

Maybe your body telling you to rest . Shut off the Music and the cp and go to bed and rest.
