Should I tell that I cut?!

Question: Should I tell that I cut?
I self harm my waist and I think Im going to tell somone. Im NOT telling a doctor/counseler/theripast because that would involve my mother (im 13) whom I am not telling either. I MIGHT tell a (former) friend becuase we were really good friends untill I was kinda depressed for a while and she (lets call her Sara) took it personally. The people that I currently hang out with are too immature to handle knowing that (i dont mean that in a bad way, but they are)

Should I tell her? I dont like her personality (all ways looking for attention and is pretty full of herself) but shes the only person I can tell. The one other person that I like (who has a much nicer personality but Is absouloutly addicted to 'Sara's' approval) would tell her mom who would tell my mom.

Who should I tell? HOW should I tell? Should I keep it to myself? im much more likley to tell 'Sara' than person 2 because 'Sara' needs a reality check. When she wants attenion she'll put as her face book status "I picked up a knife and all most cut myself, but just fell to the floor crying". Shes fakeing because cutting is not somthing that makes a person feel facebook-proud. They feel more stupid and embarressed. I think she would wake up if I told her though. What should I do?

Answers:

I don't think you should tell her. I mean, you said she just needs a reality check; do you really think she could help you with cutting? If not, talk to a school counselor, but don't mention you cut. Talk about things that might lead you to cut and see if s/he can help you to come up with alternatives for your cutting.

Don't keep it to yourself though, if you truly believe that your friend could help, tell her.

please please please tell your counselor or doctor - yes, your mom wlll end up being involved but the person you tell will help you with that. This will only get worse - even if you think you can control it - you'll find out you were wrong - it is stronger then you by yourself. Please let someone help you - there is no shame in this.

Honey, you need to tell your mother because although it might be embarrassing it's VERY important that she know whats going on. AND that you get Professional help.

I used to cut

why the hell do you do it anyway? seems to me like u also want attention

I think that you should tell her, if you trust her and that you feel that she won't tell anyone else and that she can handle it.
Don't tell her just to 'wake her up', tell her because you want to and because she can help you.
I know how frustrating it is when people say things like that on Facebook and other networks, but it's something that we have to deal with. People don't understand properly what it feels like unless they have been there - and I don't wish that on anyone.

Tell someone that you trust and feel that they can help you. I would begin by telling them how you are feeling, and why you cut yourself. Then, see how they react, if they react well then I would ease your self harm in to the conversation. If they react badly, then leave the conversation at that and gently steer the conversation away from that topic.

I don't think that you should keep it to yourself, as self harm is a difficult spiral to get out of and it is a lot easier to stop when you have someones support with you.
Trust me, telling someone is the first step to conquering it. Remember to tell them that you want help.
I definitely suggest telling whoever you tell in person, rather than text or internet as then you can see how they react and they cannot save the text/chat.

I would suggest not telling the people who you say are immature for obvious reasons.
Although it is probably best to tell a doctor/therapist/councilor about your self harm, I know how you feel and telling someone is a lot better than telling no-one.

I wish you all the best, good luck telling someone, I know how hard it is x
