I have selective mutism and I am 17. I find it difficult to talk, but I force myself too talk because it's the only way I can. It will probably make you feel awkward but it works. If you try and speak to your friends first it will be easier. It will also be easier for you to speak now before you are older. Good luck, think positively and don't give up.

You would have to want some goal very badly. Then, you set down steps to reach that goal which would involve public speaking. You would need a way to tape your voice, so you can improve the voice quality. If you lower your chin, fill your diaphragm, open your larynx, and use the breath to support the sound your produce, your voice quality will be deeper and more grown up sounding. The next step would be the quality of what you have to impart. The more you read, the more you will know. I didn't speak much, as it was believed children were seen and not heard. I wanted to be sociable, popular and a cheerleader. I made myself learn to speak. Holding in the thoughts actually leads to anger and inappropriate utterances. Speaking is a social skill, and it must be utilized in a developmental way. If you have waited so many years, get help from the school counselor. If you are interested, make a presentation to your family and convene a meeting, so they will at least understand your problem. It, also, helps to have a job. At a job with the public, one has to speak. Don't shy away from making speeches or asking questions in class. Singing would help strengthen your voice and confidence, so join choir if offered. High school will bring those changes you seek. Take the opportunities offered to join all the activities and become a leader. Make that a goal. A good, clear voice and clear thoughts are an asset. Practice is one way to improve. Even cardiovascular activities help by opening the lungs. Do some independent research on discourse and singing. Join the debate team in high school. You can improve if you wish.
