Why did this happen to me?!

Question: Why did this happen to me?
I admit this was stupid and irresponsible, but one time I got drunk and I decided to mix Xanax and Ambien. Bad idea, I know.

My girlfriend told me I stated acting like an absolutely maniac. I was telling her my dog had psychic powers and knew how how the universe was created and I was laying #%@%#dD up across the coffee table.

I don't remember any of this. At all.

I know what these drugs do, but why did they make me act like a psychopath?

Answers:

First of all, because all three drugs (Xanax, Ambien, alcohol) are central nervous system depressants that when taken in combination have a synergystic effect (a more pronounced effect when taken in combination than the sum of them individually). Secondly, what such substances depress is not only the conscious faculty but the inhibitions as well (in Freudian terms the ego and superego). If depressed enough, at least in theory, one creates a kind of temporary psychopathy, since the lack of such inhibitions (or conscience) is what characterizes psychopaths normally without the need for any drugs. In short, you're depressing consciousness and conscience, and you're depressing them a great deal with that kind of dangerous combination – not only dangerous in terms of how you behave but dangerous to yourself in terms of being physiologically life-threatening. It also explains the blackout (lack of memory), not unusual with that degree of sedation. If that kind of abuse of such substances persists, such behavior tends to get worse and the blackouts more comprehensive. It's one reason why there is such a high correlation between violent crime and alcohol use, and why psychopaths generally are averse to such substances; morally, the psychopath is already in the state the drunk achieves with alcohol. The psychopath doesn't need a drug to take away his inhibitions. The normal person does.

BA Psychology and various.

Because that's just what drugs do. They mess up your mind.
