depressed...don't want to go back to college...?!

Question: Depressed...don't want to go back to college...?
I am a freshman in college and I have been clinically depressed for 3 years now and have been taking medication for a little over 1 year. I love college...it is the best thing that has happened to me but for some reason the last month I have been spiraling downward in my depression more so than ever before. I thought it was bad the past couple years but it's scaring me how bad it has gotten. I have been thinking about suicide more and more but I really don't understand why at this point in my life where I have made so many new friends and am really enjoying college that my depression is getting worse. I want to drop out but my parents don't know how bad it has gotten and i'm not sure how that will help me but i'm so lost right now...can anybody give me any advice?

Answers:

Why haven't you been seeing your psychiatrist? Your doctor and the people around you need to know about this.

You also need to understand what depression is...and it sounds like your doctor hasn't really explained this to you. Sometimes there is no specific reason. It can be chemical more than actual events that are causing it. Medication helps a great deal. Perhaps your meds need to be re-evaluated.

Dropping out of college in order to get healthy is not a bad thing. I had to do it...unfortunately, I didn't listen and ran myself into the ground so my leaving was not entirely by choice. However, it was the best thing to happen to me. College will always be there. I'm 38 and I'm just getting my degree after having to leave due to illness 12 years ago. It took awhile and it took patience...but I still did it. People do it all the time.

What's important is that you need to take care of yourself.

Whatever the case, you need to tell your parents and your doctor immediately.

25 yrs severe depression with suicidal tendencies, 10 yrs panic/anxiety disorder, 12 yrs since my mutliple sclerosis diagnosis (among other illness) ...with good doctors who care, hard work, and some medication, I'm finally starting to get better

If you have the option to take. Year off do it, I took two years off after high school, I worked and moved to different places. Sometimes it makes you see what you really want to do.

So many stupid people are predicting the world will end in 2012.

You HAVE to stick around so you can laugh at them in 2013

Yes....mocking a world full of idiots is a reason to live
