Bi-Polar is an inherited disease it can show up during childhood, teens or as an adult. It is a problem with the disruption of brain chemicals called Serotonin and Neurotransmitters. Those without Bi-Polar who are mentally healthy have a healthy supply of those chemicals. You can't diagnose yourself and unfortunately nobody on this site can. You need to see a psychiatrist, the specialist who can give you a correct diagnosis and the right safe medications that will allow you to live a happy and productive life. Only the right medications can help with the disruption of brain chemicals. No matter what anybody says there are no natural cures or diets.

yes you are basically born with bipolar but the symptoms start when you are a teenager. You can not diagnose yourself with Bipolar... you need a psychiatrist to diagnose you. Bipolar usually starts with s depressive episode but is followed by a manic episode. Dperessive episodes generally last for months and manic episodes last from one week to many months. No Bipolar is NOT caused by depression but is often begins with a depressive episode.

Genetics and Environmental factors play in.

Some people are born with Bipolar and it becomes active at a very young age, or it stays dormant until something triggers it.

Otherwise, people develop Bipolar from environmental factors. Many victims of abuse or neglect, or some type of traumatic life experience can develop Bipolar after experiencing long periods of depression or many other disorders. You can't really can't put your finger on it though.

Being evaluated for Bipolar 1

The simple answer is that you do not get bipolar disorder, you have it at birth. There are certain activities, however, that can increase the likelihood of an episode. Alcohol abuse should be avoided as it can trigger an episode. Alcohol and drug abuse can also be symptoms of the disease. Any kind of life event may cause an episode, especially those that cause one to contemplate their future. Manic episodes can be brought on by those susceptible to bipolar disorder by many different substances. Excessive doses of certain over-the-counter drugs such as appetite suppressants, cold medicine and even caffeine can cause the disease to come forward. (moderate use is usually fine) Certain prescribed non-psychiatric medications may cause an episode, such as thyroid medication. Also illegal drugs such as ecstasy, amphetamines or cocaine have been shown to cause bipolar symptoms. Anyways hope it helps.

The answer is unknown. Bipolar may have multiple causes. The new study of epigenetics may well figure in - it may not be your genes so much, but what happened to your great great grandmother in the Prussian war - her stress then may have flipped an epigenetic switch or switches and this could affect many generations. Who knows? Nobody yet. Google epigenetics-this is important new science. If you are in school, it would be a good science paper.

To add to the list of things that can trigger bipolar, antidepressants and stimulants like ritalin commonly do it. many getting mania on these pills may not have bipolar though. In my case, my first mania (full blown) was due to prozac. I've had unprovoked mania since then though. but if I never took prozac, maybe I wouldn't have gotten bipolar.

ps the cause of bipolar is not known. no chemical imbalance has been found. the cause is more complicated than that, it appears. it was only ever a hypothesis, a good one, but it hasn't panned out. it is hard to do this research because there may be multiple causes.

PS no, depression probably isn't a cause of bipolar. some people get mania before they ever get a depression. It's important to know that many people who have depression take antidepressants, and then they get bipolar, and maybe the antidepressants actually caused them to be bipolar. Maybe they never would have gotten mania in their entire lives had they not taken antidepressants. So that may be why so many people have bipolar now. it is also very overdiagnosed, which is too bad, because many of the drugs people are told to take the rest of their lives are very toxic. Not worth it, unless you have the most severe case of mental illness, which is not the case with many bipolar diagnoses nowadays. the diagnosis used to require your problems be so bad that you had to be in the hospital for your own safety.

It can be genetic, or from using antidepressants/anxiolytics; view http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articl…

Bipolar disorder is much overdiagnosed. Consult a clinical psychologist, who believes in the use of the minimum amount of medications necessary. Google: "clinical psychologists; (your location)" Because they don't prescribe, they are considerably less likely to be targeted by the sales reps from "BIG PHARMA", who profile them psychologically and use the approach deemed to be the most effective at manipulating their type.

1) Born with it / genetics

2) Depression

3) Chemical misballance in the brain that happens later in life.

{culd happen in any order or all 3 culd b he reason it happens}

Sorry about wat U found out U have today. F*** the people that say crap about it, just try U'r best. =)
