Can someone be cured of Bipolar?!

Question: Can someone be cured of Bipolar?
My husband has been on meds for bipolar since he was a kids I don't see any sign of his bipolar but he says that it's because he's on medication, is it possible that he doesnt have bipolar anymore because i just cannot see any bipolar i think he should come of fhis meds but he says if he does he'll get all aggressive and he may kill someone or be in a bad mood all the time etc, i don't think he will be because he's not that kinda person so how will being off his meds make him be like that, i think that being bipolar is more of his thinking he is and the doctor just trying to make money by saying he is

Answers:

No, Bipolar Disorder is a life long illness. If your husband had the disorder, he still does. He is extremely lucky if he has found medications that are preventing all of his mood symptoms.

It is VERY important that you do not try and convince him to go off of his medication without consulting his psychiatrist. Any changes in his medications should only be done under the close supervision of a psychiatrist to prevent relapse.

You are right; you probably know what kind of PERSON your husband is. You know his personality and his normal demeanor, but you do not know his ILLNESS. It would be especially dangerous for the two of you to attempt withdrawing his medications when you have never seen him "sick". You would probably not be able to spot the warning signs of an impending mood episode before it was too late.

Chi,the poster above me is correct.
"Because bipolar disorder is a lifelong and recurrent illness, people with the disorder need long-term treatment to maintain control of bipolar symptoms. An effective maintenance treatment plan includes medication and psychotherapy for preventing relapse and reducing symptom severity.21"
I am diagnosed with a similar mental disorder,I thought I was okay and cured. Not long after I went off my meds I started hallucinating and my anxiety symptoms came back.
If you really want to try, talk with him and his doctor and don't be surprised if he relapses. He could be okay without them everyone is different. I wouldn't do it though, again.

BiPolar is a lifelong mental disease that is from a chemical imbalance in the brain and requires medication.
Your huisband is exactly correct--he needs to be on medciation for the rest of his life.

the biggest problem we see at the hospital is people thinking they are 'better' or 'cured' and so they 'do not need to be on medication'.
Well, it is PRECISERLY because they are ON medication that their mental disease is being kept under control.

Yes, he might be. Before you stop medication, speak to a doctor about this. Ask him if you should try going without medication for a month and see if he's fine.
I am cutting myself and I'm depressed and lonely and want to die and kill and I am always mad!
Do you think I have it?

not really he has it under controll with meds ( which is a good thing) but as soon as he goes off his meds any thing will make him fly off the wall
