How do some of you deal with depression on days you have little to do?!

Question: How do some of you deal with depression on days you have little to do?
Today is Presidents' Day and I am a teacher so I am off work. I have bipolar disorder and mostly don't have much trouble with depression. I can usually fill my time on the weekends, as I am accustomed to being off work on the weekends, however on school holidays when I am used to being at work, I find myself bored and depressed.

I've tried to occupy myself with doing chores around the house (laundry, vacuuming, and such) but it all seems so pointless. I'm also epileptic and recently lost my driver's license, and I'm still trying to cope with no longer being able to drive. I could go shopping or something, but it seems like so much effort to take public transit to get anywhere that I just don't think I can do it. Not to mention that I'm afraid if I go shopping, I'll spend too much money in an effort to make myself feel better and then I'll feel guilty for spending too much on top of everything else.

It also annoys me that one of the best parts of being a teacher, in many people's opinion, is the fabulous schedule and random holidays off work, yet I rarely find myself able to enjoy these days because honestly, I'd rather be at work where I can keep busy by teaching and not have to think about being depressed. Today, mostly I'm just watching the clock and waiting for it to get late enough that I can take my Seroquel and go to bed. Heck, I'd take it now and go to bed, but I know I'd wake up in the middle of the night and not be able to get back to sleep. Sleep is so nice because when I'm asleep I don't have to think about anything. It isn't even 3 yet, and I won't take my Seroquel until at least 8.

I'd call a friend to come over, but my friends don't get today off, so they're all at work. I have a new book that I'm excited to read (it's the latest in a series I've loved for years) and I haven't started it yet, but even that doesn't sound appealing.

Anybody experience this? Anybody have any tips on dealing with what seems to be boredom related depression? I can think of things to do, but none of them sound like any fun.

Answers:

Watch a classic comedy series, like Red Dwarf, Blackadder, Fawlty Towers, Dad's Army, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, Monty Python, any of those.
Try reading more. When I get into a really good book, I have lost about three hours before.
Or try gaming. An MMORPG like Runescape can soak up a surprising amount of time, and could also give you something in common to talk to your students with.
Or you could try exercising more. A six mile round walk could soak up a couple of hours, and you barely need to think. Especially good if, as you said, can't drive everywhere.

Hope it helps!

I didn't read what you wrote, sorry. I don't have depression either but when I have a low mood I watch comedy. It makes me laugh and forget about whatever is making me sad.

Watch a movie, and eat lot's of food. You could try going for a walk or something too.

do any science experiments like
cooking, listening to music, chatting on internet
stand on two cans of bottles and close your eyes and round your head as many times as you want then if you get 3-4 you are as intelligent as 24 year old ppl if you got 5-and more you are more intelligent than 30year old ppl it is really fun but make sure you will land on something soft and remember close your eyes and circulate your head as many times as you can and try to remember how many you did it is really fun if that wont help watch some funny shows
