do you think depression is a disease?!

Question: Do you think depression is a disease?
The way i see it, i see depression as a problem people have when they build up to much negativity from past events in there minds and end up getting "depressed". To me a disease is like cancer or an STD. I was in a debate and half my class turned on me because i didn't believe that depression feel under the same category as cancer, i was called an idiot and that my opinion shouldn't be expressed if its so stupid. I just think that depression is just your mind fooling around with you, i mean you can overcome depression, why would someone want to be sad and sometimes take their lives, when they could be happy and live a great life. I got mad when they compared it to cancer because people don't have a choice to have cancer and the doctors can actually physically see cancer, they cannot however, see depression. Sorry for the length but this really got me thinking.

Just because you can't see it doesn't mean it's not physiological. And, might I add that no one *chooses* to have depression, it is not your "mind fooling around with you" and some people are chemically incapable of being "happy and living a great life". It's a chemical disease of the brain, it can be triggered by past events, traumas, genetics, heredity, etc but those things have a chemical base and they can also eventually cause changes on our DNA.

Some people do abuse the word and call something depression when it's really not, but Major Depressive Disorder can be a lifelong battle that is *never* overcome.

I would say that your opinion is uneducated at best and ignorant and judgmental at worst. Please try to educate yourself on the subject.

There are more then one catagories of diseases, no depression is not under the same catagory as cancer, cancer is a physical disease where as depression is a mental one. So yes it is a disease, but not the same type as cancer

Some people get over cancer. Some people get over depression. Cancer dis-eases you. So does depression.

You can't compare a life threatening disease to a condition which might cause you to become suicidal. You can't see depression in black and white you have to step in that deep dark cave yourself to know what it feels like. There is notable differences in the brain of a clinically depressed people don't use the logic "if you can't see it doesn't exist" you can't see mentally retardation in some people but it doesn't mean it' not there.

Some depression is genetic with an idiopathic cause and some is simply brought on by your environment in some cases. Some people actually get ECT(shock therapy) causing you to have a seizure causing brain damage in an attempt to cure the depression but still don't feel any better depression is caused when brain chemicals aren't in equilibrium.

Everyone cries depression when they feel bad,it's one of the overdiagnosed illnesses which causes the people who actually have it to be stigmatized. Most people who have it can't control it even with the use of SSRI's depression is the death of yourself metaphorically.Take a step in someone elses shoes you have no idea what it's like.

Depression isn't being "sad" it's hating yourself so much that you can't help but take an exacto knife and slash your arms,or you can't help but swallow that cyanide pill.

When they cut a tumor out of your body it may or may not come back,it's the same thing with depression.Depression is classified as a neuropsychiatric condition as it effects the way your brain functions in relation to the sciences(chemistry, biology).Psychiatrist… are doctors who treat depression using medication if depression wasn't a disease and you could just "snap out of it" do you think they'd have a medical profession centered around things you "can't see"?

When you make arguments don't rely on fallacies it makes you look ignorant.
