I tried 3 other medications and Paxil is the only one that was able to help me. The others either didn't work at all (Prozac) or had debilitating side effects such as severe panic attacks and nausea/vomitting (Celexa). With the Paxil, although I have gained some weight (20 lbs), I am now able to handle stress and finally feel truly happy for the first time in 25 years. Talking about the side effects - increased hunger, although this could be due to lessening of anxiety. For the first year, inability to have orgasm, however in the second year on Paxil this side effect went away. All antidepressants gave me horrible nightmares - stuff like people being decapitated, shot in the head, body parts sawed off, really really really awful.

I also got mania, although not from paxil, that was prozac.

anyhow, it turns out antidepressants are working thru placebo effect in nearly all patients - google Irving Kirsch for more on that. His work has since been confirmed by other researchers. I believe it is Paxil that the drug companies ran about 12 studies in order to get 2 to submit to the FDA in order to show paxil was better than a sugar pill. It's even worse than you think - it turns out most patients and almost all researchers figure out who is on placebo and who on the active drug, so these studies are never really double blinded.

PS about half or more than half of people get severe sexual side effects. None of the so-called antidotes for this side effect worked for me, and don't work for many people at all. so if you have any interest in sex, don't even bother with SSRI's or SSNI's. you won't get used to it - that side effect wont' go away, and in some people, it seems to have been permanent damage. Nobody bothers to do a study to confirm if these anecdotal reports are really a side effect, so the risk is unknown

Paxil made my stomach very acidic all the time, I ended up switching to Lexapro.
