Why does my roommate constantly talk to himself?!

Question: Why does my roommate constantly talk to himself?
He is always talking to himself, but only when he's alone or separate from others. He's 20 years old and in college like me, but I find this attribute of his puzzling and disturbing. Even in the shower, toilet, etc. I can always hear that low murmur of constant talk! He even goes so far as to make hand motions and look around him like he's talking to a real person. His father has a history of mental illness but I do not know any more info than that. It kind of concerns me so I wanted to see what other people thought of this 'predicament'. I don't think that he can think normally now without going through this slow, arduous process of talking to himself.. Any time I ask him about it, he seems embarrassed about it and quickly just tries to cover it up as 'that's just how I think'. But I think it's abnormal and will eventually lead to his mental instability / 'living in a fantasy world'. I mean literally hours of talking to himself every day! this guy is a little weird.. Now, let's see what kind of responses I get, if any.

Answers:

I know that there are some levels of nervousness, anxiety, and even some OCD that can be the cause. One of my friends does the same thing, though not as often as you mentioned for your roommate. She is always on edge and responds with a "What? Hmm?" whenever you call her name. It could be his normal thought process.

OCD comes into play because they feel they cant really think the same if they keep it in, one of my other friends is the same because of his OCD.

If you want his to stop, he might have to see a psychologist to see if there is anyother cause for his actions (Traumatic experience in which he began to think and talk to himself in such a way and stuck with him since) Psychologists are behavior experts, and talking and thinking like he does is a behavior thing.

Also, hope you're enjoying college!

That is probably just how he thinks... There are a few people who need to talk themselves through their thoughts in order to make sense of it... some of the greatest minds in the world are often caught muttering things to themselves... it's an odd thought process, i know, but if that's how he functions, he can't help it. You should really only be concerned if the content he is muttering is disturbing... If it's just everyday stuff that you, or anyone, would commonly think about... just learn to ignore it...

If he's not a danger to you or himself, then I wouldn't worry about it and would just let him go.
Talking to himself doesn't make him "weird." It's just the way he thinks. Maybe he's overstressed and needs to. Or maybe he doesn't have anyone else to talk to. He's not hurting anyone by doing this, so relax.

Maybe schitzophrenia? Not sure. But even so, give the guy a break. If he's not endangering you then just let him be. It could just be his way of thinking, as he said. Or maybe he has a few "friends" he consults to help him out with things. I do the same thing, only not out loud.

He's weird.
