What is like being bi-polar and medicated?!

Question: What is like being bi-polar and medicated?
My doctor thinks I might be. I have friends that have been diagnosed, but they don't like taking their medication. They say it numbs them and they feel like zombies.

Answers:

At a mental institution I worked at it was mandatory that all staff members read every patients file for safety purposes.
Most of the bipolar ppl had highs n lows and when they were feeling really good (manic) they felt EXTREMELY great, but the slightest thing could send them into a deep depression, sometimes suicidal depression.
The drugs they were on ranged from Geodon,Trileptal,Zoloft,Effexor,Lithium,… & I don't remember the rest. The patients were very sluggish on their meds. And some of the meds caused anxiety which meant they were also put on things like Buspirone,Xanax & Klonopin.Sometimes patients were actually to the point of being oblivious to the world with their eyes wide open,or sleeping 24/7.
If you are bipolar I urge you to find the minimal dosees of meds needed so you don't become a zombie. Don't trust a general physician either. See a psychiatrist that is up to date on meds.

Some psych meds will have that effect. If you still feel like a zombie after 6wks, you ASK FOR A DIFFERENT MED. In this day and age, with the 200000000 million billion psych meds out there, there's going to be one that can work and doesn't do that.

It makes them like; Normal.

It probably depends on the degree of the disorder and their own personal reaction tot he medication they are place on. Perhaps your friends were incorrectly diagnosed or their dosage needs adjusting.

I am bipolar and I do take my meds. I like being on my meds. When I'm not on them I am psycotic and deadly and I feel no remorse for what I do.

I take my med everyday. I take Lamictal, and I don't feel numb or like a zombie. If I didn't take it I couldn't stand myself, and nobody could stand me.
