Should I see a different therapist?!

Question: Should I see a different therapist?
I was diagnosed with ADHD three years ago, and stopped seeing my therapist of the time after a couple months. I've developed coping strategies and what not.

I began seeing a new therapist last week, as I've been struggling with my symptoms. For the $175 I paid for the initial session, he essentially said "Oh...well you've already put in place everything I have on my list. Maybe medication?" However, hes not even sure who to refer me to to get a prescription.

I'm just wondering if its a waste of time. Should I cut out the therapy and just go straight to a doctor and try to get medication?

Answers:

I have seen numerous therapist for years, it takes a while to find one you connect with then it took me a while to realize they weren't going to fix me, I had to fix myself. They were there to listen and make suggestions and guide me on my journey. Now I find if I journal, just start writing, the answers to my confusion and depression come out on paper. It is kind of like dorothy and the wizard of oz, everything she needed she had all along, she just had to realize it! Good luck, I'd go to the Dr. get the meds and work on yourself at your pace.

If you have been diagnosed with ADHD you should see a doctor as there are many safe medications that can help you. You don't have to live with ADHD. Unfortunately there isn't much that a therapist can do to help you unless you have other underlying problems along with the ADHD. Please see a doctor and change the rest of your life for the better.

sounds like ur so called therapist is clueless, go to ur doctor and tell him to help u find u a new one that has a good reputation and actually cares for his/her patients

Medication should never be used as a way to correct any mental health disorders. Therapy should always be the primary means of helping with the disorder while medications are used to assist you in helping you cope with the disorder. To me it sounds like (from what you explain) is that you need to find a different doctor! Its sad, but there are some doctors out there that take advantage of people. I would maybe speak to the original doctor that made the diagnosis, and ask what you should do, and who they can refer to you to write a prescription. Most psychologist and psychiatrists should be able to write prescriptions anyway. I hope this helps and good luck with your search! Having experience with ADHD on a personal level makes me happy to hear that you developed coping strategies, and that means you are much better managed than most people with ADHD. GOOD LUCK

I am a nurse (this is not medical advice), and I am a sufferer of ADHD
