I feel very unmotivated and I have a hard time concentration, help please?!

Question: I feel very unmotivated and I have a hard time concentration, help please?
I feel very unmotivated when it comes to my school work ( I'm in the 10th grade) I'm not a dumb kid, but if I don't understand something, I usually just give up. With my homework, I can only concentrate on it for around 5 to 10 minutes (rough estimate) if it doesn't interest me, and after that I usually do something fun for me like talking to my friends on the comp.I can not work without wanting to go and do something else, and usually I just do it so I don't believe going away from the TV, or computer will help me at all. At school, i can't concentrate at all because it doesn't interest me, I try to listen but i always just go back to doing something pointless. This especially happens in math, if I just listened, I think I would know what to do, but I just can't so I'm behind.

What should I do? I was thinking about seeing a doctor about this, but my mom just thinks I'm lazy but I think it's more than that, but idk i'm not a doctor lol so any thoughts?

Answers:

I have the same problem. It's called ADD (attention deficit disorder). It's very common and it is exactly as you have described.

You are not lazy, it just has to do with a chemical imbalance in the brain which is alleviated by medication (ie: Adderall, Ritalin).

This medication helped me focus tremendously while I was in school and I was able to pay attention as well as accomplish goals and tasks. You definitely should talk to a psychiatrist about this so you can get back to being more productive.

Your mom's right. Go out with your friends and have a good time. Meet new people and stop sitting out home complaining about how miserable you are. When you don't care about the subject, the subject won't care about you, giving you an even harder time so chin-up and pay attention in class. It doesn't hurt to do good in school...
