What are some good supplements to take for depression and anxiety?!

Question: What are some good supplements to take for depression and anxiety?
I have been on and off of citalopram for a year for depression and mood swings. It helps, but I wanted to get off of it. Are there any supplements that help with mood swings and depression. I do take a multivitamin. I also suffer from social anxiety and take valium off and on. I don't take them everyday. Are there any supplements that I could take besides valium? Thanks.

Answers:

you should try st johns wort. ive been taking them three months now and thy have really helped with my anxiety and depression. i feel calmer and more capable. You can buy it at most good health food shops. I hope this helps. :)

Against anxiety you may try methods for lowering blood pressure like controlled deep breathing or
beet root juice. Walking/jogging/treadmill is helpful against depression and anxiety because the glucose level in blood is reduced and the BDNF level is increased.
A strong method against anxiety is drinking passion flower tea. It is working as strong as Valium but no addiction. Walnuts and almonds are great for reducing insulin resistance and lowering the circulating needed insulin amount. They are something like anti-stress food with a build in weak antidepressant. No side effects known. If anxiety is leading to bad short time memory and impaired
learning I would also consider methods which are lowering the stress hormone Cortisol like meditation
or herbals like basil, karma tulsi (holy basil) which is used in Ayurveda or adaptogenes like ginseng.

I could recommend several medications, but it wouldn't matter because everyone reacts differently to different medications. Talk to your doctor, try different medications.. I went through dozens of different medication combinations and doses before I got it just right. I believe the combination of medication AND therapy is the most effective way to conquer anxiety and depression, though.

I hope this helps!

Healthy food, exercise, sunlight.

Handling dirt is actually proven to be an effective anti-depressant, you could start planning a garden for the spring.

If none of that works, try smoking some weed. Although that may not be effective for social anxiety.

Whatever you do, stay away from those pharmaceuticals. Sounds like you are on the right track.

Try Saint Johns wort- my mum and sister swear by it.

To be honest, I wouldn't recommend any drugs. That's not going to help you overcome depression or your anxieties, it is just going to trick your mind and body that it has gone away for a while. But, thats just someones opinion, I don't really rely on the help of drugs, but I can recommend a few things which can help with your mental health :)

- Eating healthily everyday (Lot of fruit, vegetables and light food), especially oranges regularly, eating lightly will actually put you in a better mood, and oranges help prevent depression if eaten regularly.

- Everyday, make sure you are exposed to as much natural sun light as possible, open your all of your curtains, and don't be shut away in the dark and make yourself feel drowzy.

- Keeping a diary and writing in it daily on all of your thoughts, regularly also helps to prevent depression and puts anxious emotions at ease. Even if you feel you have nothing to write about, just write about things that may not seem to be important, what you thought about, what you didn't think about. Also, keeping a diary allows you to always be honest with yourself, and gives you a fulfillment with some things you may of not known you were bottling up.

-Talk to people all the time. Even if you do not feel like it, this will help with support from others, and helping you to maintain a social life with any kinds of friends and family and will allow you to develop hobbies, routines, maybe closer friendships. This is very important, because it will give you a chance to take you out of your own mind and all of your negative thoughts, and bring you back to other peoples positive way of life, and this may rub off on you too.

-Wake up every morning, look at yourself in the mirror, and smile and let yourself know, that the day is going to be a good day (Even if you do not mean this). This will allow yourself to be brainwashed into having a better day than usual, if you persuade yourself you are going to have a good day, then things which may annoyed you on a normal day (Like being late for work, or being fined for parking illegaly or something) may not bother you as much if you let yourself know, you are having a good day. This exercise helps you to be under less stress.

-Do things you enjoy (Or used to enjoy) do things which may entertain you, or provide the mind with pleasure, like picking up an old hobbie, a sport especially picking yourself up creatively, as this is the best form of expression (Writing, painting, music, etc)

-Fall asleep listening to soothing music, with happy melodies, such as spring sounds, high pitched classical music, or any type of music you love, but make sure it has to have a positive melody to it. If this is done every night, it will also prepare you for the next day, and cause less stress for you.

Also, other small things which help with depression for a short term:
A) Spend time outdoors, amongst greenery and flowers.
B) Play with a pet if you have one...
C) Read a positive book you are interested in
D) Take a long hot bath
E) Watch a funny movie or TV show
F) Do something spontaneous
G) List the things you like about yourself, and what good use you are to others
H) Take care of some small tasks
I) Make yourself look nice (Even if you are at home)

... Its likely you will not want to do any of the above. However, if you just trust yourself, and do it anyway, no matter what you feel may be holding you back, just force yourself to do these little things daily and the small tasks right above every now and then, soon enough you will want to do most of them a lot more anyway. This may help you to feel less depressed and keeping stress levels down and help you more than any drug has. It is just simply a matter of telling yourself you are happy, even if you know you are lying to yourself, this will evacuate the negative thoughts in your head more and more.

I just know some stuff. :)

Valerian: This is a herb which is used for multiple purposes like treating insomnia, anxiety, high blood pressure and even menstrual problems. This herb is extracted from the root of Valerian plant. It is claimed to have a sedating effect on people and can be used as an over the counter stress medication as well.
Proloftin: It is claimed to have an anxiolytic effect and induce calmness in a person suffering from anxiety disorder. Proloftin replenishes vitamin B in the body which acts to restore the body's ability to fight stress and strain.
Benadryl: Benadryl is an anti-allergic medication which can also be used as anxiety medication. Over the counter stress medications are few, as its indiscriminate use can have serious problems. Benadryl is often used for many things like insomnia, nausea, anxiety, loose motions etc., other than common cold and cough. It has been misused by people because of its doping effect.
Plassiflora Incarnata: Plassiflora is a herbal remedy which helps in anxiety and can be easily bought over the counter. Anxiety medications like plassifora hardly contain any serious side effects, and the minor reaction to this medicine is drowsiness and headaches. Also known as passion flower, it can cure insomnia as well. It can be taken in liquid form with your evening tea or coffee, or with just plain water. The flavonoids present in plassiflora incarnata effectively work on the brain cells which are responsible for anxiety.
Chamomile: It is another natural remedy for anxiety which is popular as a anti-anxiety herb. This herb is extracted from the Chamaemelum nobilis, either from its white flowers or its plume like leaves. The use of chamomile is known to relieve tension and agitation. It can be consumed in the form of tincture, tea, capsules or even powder. The dosage has to be carefully prepared, as an overdose of chamomile can result in swelling of body parts, irregularities in menstrual cycles, itchiness, breathing problems

Anxiety can be battled out by proper medication and a healthy lifestyle. Medications for anxiety disorders are too many, therefore, take the medicine which has been prescribed by your doctor only. If you are thinking of buying anxiety medication, over the counter drugs may not be the right choice. If you are experiencing mild episodes of anxiety or stress, any natural remedy for anxiety would be better than pharmaceutical drug. Therefore, ward off all your tensions and overcome anxiety and depression with these over the counter anxiety medications, and keep on living your life.
