Could be hormones, so something you'll grow out of. I know how frustrating not sleeping is especially if you have stuff to do the next day and your like a zombie. What I can tell you is I've tried 3 different types of medication from the doctors and all of them were pure junk, sure I slept, but they all had nasty side effects, you can only use them short term and when you come off them you end up worse for a few weeks!

Alternative things I've tried are getting up really early, like 6am, and going for a run then coming home having breakfast and going too work, getting home and doing something that makes me happy like reading a good book or watching some good films etc. If there is anything at all on my mind I write it down in a list for things to look at tomorrow, this helps get them out your head so your not lying there thinking and worrying about them.

I only go to bed when I start to feel tired, so some nights its like 10.30pm and sometimes its not until 1am, I just go with what my body tells me. I found that pretending your asleep really helps, just imagine you had to fool someone into believing your asleep and let your body relax into a sleep pose and get the breathing right, next thing you know its time to get up in the morning.

Also look at why your depressed, there are maybe things in your life that your unhappy of frustrated about, write a list of them down and then categorise them into things you can change and things outside your control. Find a friend to talk to about all your problems as once you speak about them they loose some of their strength and you can relax a bit more knowing someone is on your side.

Make sure your bedroom is tidy and clean, if you've got stuff like clothes and books and magazines all over the place then subconsciously that's one of the last things you see at night and your mind does not like it, it prefers order so it stresses about it even with out you realising.

Another thing that helped was horlicks mixed with milk about an hour before I wanted to go to bed.

Hope some of these things help, and don't get any crap from the doctor, waste of time.

I would try lavenders oil in a hankie if i were you. My brother went to bed once and was up two hours later saying he couldn't sleep. He tried this and he went straight to sleep. I still use this sometimes. It really helps. While you lay in bed, put the hankie your pillow and lay comfortably. Take deep breaths and make sure you breath out slowly. This will help you to relax and sleep more easily. Hope this helps :)
