I'm very scared and don't know what to do?!

Question: I'm very scared and don't know what to do?
I have extreme social phobia, and fear of change. and I am 31 and never had a job. I quit going to school nearly 8 years ago because I felt it was a waste of time and money since I had no direction for a career. I don't feel anyone will hire me since I'm this old and never worked. I don't know where to start. I wake up every day hating my life more and more because I feel there's no hope to get out of it. I have no references. I feel like I'm on the verge of a nervous breakdown unless I can do something about this. Is there any hope for me?

Answers:

First, at age 31 you are not too old for anything, in fact you are just beginning life as an adult who knows right from wrong, good from bad. You said you're a 'professional student' by continuously going to school, so surely you have interest in something, and that interest is what you should follow to make a career.

I also have extreme social phobia so I understand how you must feel a lot of the time, but there is hope and medical help you to help control it a lot better. There are some really good prescription medications now that don't make you feel doped-up, actually with these medications you don't 'feel' anything at all, no medication effects, except you find you just feel better. For this particular illness I strongly suggest you see a psychiatrist who can properly prescribe the medications you need.

Perhaps you're one who doesn't have to work. If that's the case, find a purpose in life. Maybe choose a hobby or something you truly enjoy doing and make the most of it.

You're certainly not a lost cause. First things first, get help with the social phobia and I believe you'll find a world of difference in how you see yourself and the world.

Hope this helps.

1. get a therapist
2. go to job interviews. they are good practice for you, even if you don't get the job. don't give up, keep going to them. at the end of the interview, ask what you can do better. take their advice. keep trying. it will be hard, but you need to take the jump

There is hope for even the hopeless ^.^
