How to you tell someone that they are not mentally ill ?!

Question: How to you tell someone that they are not mentally ill ?
I sometimes come across people desperate to prove they have a psychotic type illness on the internet but actually they clearly dont meet the criteria to be diagnosed. They blame the shrink the gp anyone but dont accept perhaps their illness may be as actually diagnosed, usually personality disorder, that although very painful and difficult, cannot be treated with meds alone and involves accepting responsibility and taking part in therapy.
Unfortunately a few people with this can be very difficult and can bully or attack if challenged in any way.

Im stuck, and dont know what to do. I feel like I am banging my head against a brick wall because I cannot give the individual what they want because to do so would make me a liar, and would also mean people who have schizophrenia or bipolar missing out on treatment as services, for example respite, are over subscribed by people with certain personality disorders. advice please.

Answers:

Don't worry so much about telling them, they know that don't really have psychosis, it's a matter of time before the care that they are given now helps them admit it to themselves.
I'm presuming the people you are talking about are in the mental health system (trying to get a diagnosis)? trust the doctors to do what they were hired to do. It's impossible to make people believe what they don't want to hear, don't make it your job to do it.
Good luck x

Personality disorders do qualify as mental illnesses....... As for the drama queens getting better treatment... ever heard "the squeaky weel gets the grease"? That is how life works....... not really much you can do about it. Besides if it is people you are encountering on the internet... just avoid them or the situation, it's not like it's someone in your family or anything.

If someone is trying to tell you they have a disorder then they do, a need for attention disorder! Most people who have an actual mental or psychological disorder is aware that they do, so how are they going to tell you they do? This person/or these people you are referring to are simply and completely desperate for attention!
I guess that didn't answer your question... Just tell them what I said I guess. Say if you truly had a disorder you wouldn't be talking to me about it. It might make them at least stop blabbing about it.

So what you're saying is, you're more qualified than these people's GPs to tell them whether onot they have a mental illness?

Maybe you should concentrate more on yourself and less on other people.
