Getting off my anti-depressant....help?!

Question: Getting off my anti-depressant....help?
I am almost eighteen but my mother still trys to control me and she never allows me to decide something for myself. I tell her today that I want to stop taking my anti-depressant and she freaks. She was trying to force me to take it but I was like no. I told her give me half so I can wean off of it and know what she does? She doesn't give it to me at all. So what should I do? Spend a few days of hell withdrawing from it because I'm done taking them. They never worked so why take them. I can get better without these pills. I'm on 20 mg of lexapro.

Answers:

I too struggled with taking harmful, ineffective antidepressants. yet i was being forced to continue to take them. one day i flushed them down the toilet and made a pact with myself that i would NEVER allow anyone to medicate me that way again. I am in charge of my own mind and my own body. I am NOT a depressed person and never will be! Also, you should know that the big pharma companies hide their studies that say that these drugs don't work and could make adolescents suicidal! they are scheming to make sure that we as a nation are medicated! they only want your money and they don't care about your health! you should read "overdosed america" by John Abramson to find out more about big pharma and what you are putting in your body. He is a retired physician that is finally speaking out about the truth of the companies! i recommend that you STOP taking these pills and start doing things that YOU know are healthy and will make you happy! you are NOT depressed! eat right and exercise! these are the REAL medicines in life. explain all of this to your mother. if she refuses to listen to you, remind her and yourself that you are 18 this legally makes you an adult and NO one can force you to take any sort of medication. that is the law. :) take care

ALSO: I see that people are telling you to speak to your doctor and i am in NO WAY saying not to do that, but please be aware that these companies that make these drugs give your doctor MONEY to promote their drugs and provide your doctor with studies that they did themselves. they are a self policed industry and will do whatever it takes to cover their tracks. SO my point is that the doctors themselves are not doing the research behind this medication YOU are the lab rat here, and if YOU feel like it is not working for you then stop taking it. I know this seems like i must be paranoid but i have don't a lot of research for my medicial sociology minor about these companies and am finding disgusting results so forgive me if i am too passionate about it! You should also do some research (real research) regarding these companies who make your medication. in 1990 they won the rights to direct-to-consumer advertise and are now the most profitable industry in the US yet paradoxically we are getting sicker and sicker as a nation, becoming more depressed, with more side effects, these drugs are not working.

personal experience + psychology/sociology degree

You can never stop an anti-depressant all at once. You are right when you say you want to be weaned off of it. You can go to your doctor yourself and tell him how you feel and he will tell you what to do. Your mother CANNOT control this, she is not a doctor. Why does she have to give them to you anyway? You are old enough to do it yourself. Tell your doctor what your mother is doing.

under any circumstances DO NOT stop taking your meds cold turkey. if you are doing fine now, you will relapse and the depression will come back worse than ever. I know, i relapsed in November 2010 and am back on the medication but it no longer works unfortunately.

Do not make the same mistake I did.

Good Luck!

3000mg of flush free niacin per day is what i took and still take. Drink a few glasses of water a day and eat healthy foods. stay positive and do positive.

You should speak to your doctor about either switching to a different pill or stopping completely. The doctor will give you instructions on how to properly ween yourself off.
