My friend has been diagnosed with severe depression, they refuse help?!

Question: My friend has been diagnosed with severe depression, they refuse help?
He bluntly stated that he doesn't want medical treatment.

Before his diagnosis - about several months ago - he had attempted suicide.

He also has an eating disorder. He is 6'1 and weighs 135 pounds. He is trying to eat more but not enough to gain weight.

His parents are out of the picture. His guardians are his uncle & aunt (took custody of him when he was 14). He is 19 years old now.

He only went to the doctors because his younger brother basically pleaded him to. He has stopped going after a few months.

It's hurting me to see him this way. What should I do?

Answers:

Unless he attempts suicide again and can be treated in time there is not much that can be done. He is 19- legally an adult and it is VERY hard to have a person committed without their consent. Getting him on tape or video threating suicide is about the only other option you have and the finding someone with mental health that cares enough to make an issue of that will be unique! If and/or when he attempts suicide again the hospital will call for a Mental Health Evaluation and they should have him hospitalized because he is a threat to himself! That is about the best you can do for him besides be his friend.
