Question: I was prescribed 5mg of Lexapro from my doctor 4 weeks ago. Is it ok to have an alcoholic drink? ?
I was prescribed them for mild depression and anxiety. Did anyone out there have a drink while on antidepressants? I am feeling a bit nervous about it and heading out with my friends tonight. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Well, most people are just going to tell you to read the label, its says avoid drinking while using this pill, but thats sometimes impossible.I can tell you from experience that antidepressants and anxiety meds can change your reaction to alchol.Your not going to be able to handle the same amounts that you may have been before. If your going to drink, monitor how much your having and keep it light.Have your first drink and give it a while 30-45 mins to an hour to see how its going to effect you.Your going to get drunk alot quicker then you would have off lexapro. And remember that if you've eaten alot,it will slow down the effects so you may feel fine until your food digests so dont eat to much before drinking.Good luck

There are a couple reasons alcohol is not good with an antidepressant. The obvious reason is alcohol is a depressant, and counteracts the effectiveness of the antidepressant.

Another very important reason is both alcohol and the antidepressants tax the liver, and you don't want to nuke it before its time.

Having said that... it's okay to have a drink or two every now and then. Just a couple though. And, not very often.

Best of luck - and have a good time =)

I take generic Wellbutrin SR (150 mg) in the morning, and Lexapro (10 mg) with dinner, for depression and anxiety. I've been taking that for over two years, and it's working very well for me.

No, because Lexapro will have a synergistic effect on the alcohol making it more potent. However, if you are going to do it anyways, you really should not have more than 1 drink.

You can still have fun without alcoholic drinks, just ask for a virgin! :)

You should not really drink at all on antidepressants, so be careful what you drink, alcohol is a CNS Depressant.
