Who here has Bipolar...?!

Question: Who here has Bipolar...?
My boyfriend of 2 years is bipolar..and we have never really talked about it. I just need some info and or advice from you guys:). He is the love of my life and the fact that he is Bipolar doesn't change my feelings or make me look down on him. Oh and he is on the medication.
1) does it effect sleeping ant eating patterns? Because he has trouble sleeping and doesn't eat much.
2) What is it like? The only thing he has really told me is that he has a mild case and that it's not fun (duh)
3) How do I get him to open up to me?
4)How do you cope?
5)How do I know when his actions and/or words are because of the disorder?
6) Last Q... Do any of you guys with bipolar have a girlfriend that loves you reguardless of your bipolar? What does that make you think of her?

Answers:

I was diagnosed Bipolar too. What kind does he have? Bipolar I or Bipolar II? Its sounds like Bipolar II which is not as bad because the down and up cycles are not as frequent. Here are my answers to your questions:

1) Yes, Bipolar definitely affects sleeping and eating, if he is in a manic episode he may not sleep at all or very much for days at a time, or eat much either. It could also be the meds he is on too, though. Ask him to ask his doctor to possible try a different medication, there are a lot of different kinds for bipolar disorder.
2) Bipolar disorder is like a rollercoaster. You are up sometimes and feel very good and energetic like you are on top the world and can accomplish anything. When I was younger I had a lot of up cycles, I accomplished a lot of amazing things but I also did a lot of stupid things too because I thought I could handle anything. When you are down its the exact opposite, you are totally depressed and feel like you are worthless and stupid and will never accomplish anything. The meds do help but they all have side effects. The most common is weight gain. I hate that because I always want to look thin and good but the meds make me eat non stop. But then if I don't take the meds I get depressed and eat anyway. Bipolar people self medicate alot too, drinking alcohol too much, drugs, etc. Its pretty bad. He really has to stay in touch with his doctor to try different meds until he finds the right ones that work for him.
3) Get him to open up by researching as much as you can about the disorder, then maybe ask if he wants you to visit his doctor with him. Be as supportive as you can.
4) Its hard to cope, you really have to surrender and just try to be at peace-meditation helps me alot but to be honest I'm just messed up most the time. I just try to stay out of trouble and not get anybody angry at me as bipolars tend to make bad judgment calls a lot of times and say and do inappropriate things at the wrong times.
5) You'll know if his actions are due to bipolar by what he does. Bipolar people get angry easily, or depressed really easily, if they are manic they may spend a lot or drink a lot or I hate to say it, even engage in a lot of sex. Its just like having so much energy and grandiose plans that you think you are invincible and can do anything-thats why alot of rich and famous people are bipolar because they actually follow through and are able to make their grandiose plans work. But most bipolar people, the majority in fact don't-we just end up on meds trying as hard as we can to make life work. Your boyfriend is right it is really hard.
6) I am a guy and none of my relationships have worked out because of my bipolar disorder. If you love and support your boyfriend he should be very thankful and consider himself very lucky that you support and love him. Most girls (and guys) can't cope with the ups and downs of a bipolar person and it ends up ruining the relationship. It can ruin your friendships, family and job too. People get sick of the bipolar person always being up or down or doing or saying crazy things. Its hard to stay out of trouble when you are bipolar-always some kind of drama. Alot of bipolars end in suicide-not saying that to scare you.
You must be a very kind and warm hearted person to support your boyfriend like you do, thats very rare, he's lucky. Good luck to you both.

Hi. I have 3 family members who have bipolar disorder. So maybe I could help a little from what I notice. First, I don't think there is such thing as a mild case of bipolar. Usually when someone is in the manic stages it is hard for them to sleep because of the racing thoughts and high energy that they feel. You would know if he is doing something because of bipolar disorder. Some of the things that they do or say are very irrational. It's hard for someone with bipolar disorder to admit that they have a problem. My sister tells me that she feels great and on top of the world when she is on a manic episode. She does realize the mess that she got herself into until she is back in her depressed episode. With bipolar disorder the ups and downs are very extreme. Everybody has a different level of up and downs

be veeeeeeery careful there is no scientific proof that it is real (proven chemical imbalance in the brain) you can choose right now to get mad and calm down quickly develop a habit of it and be bipolar it's hard to believe but that's really how the system works no test to prove he is bipolar just psychiatrist crap in my opinion. I dont know alot about the brain but they dont either.

EDIT: dont get me wrong i have nothing against people with mental problems i went through crap in my life it's just, i dont trust all these people pushing all these drugs on everyone it makes people feel like there is something genetically wrong with them when they are truly healthy just need some life changes.
