Who can tell me what (if any) mental illness I have?!

Question: Who can tell me what (if any) mental illness I have?
I don't want to make a scene and get my family involved, so going to a therapist or setting up a random doctor appointment isn't really an option, and I can't really sneak over to a place to get evaluated. I was trying to find therapist online to talk to but you have to generally pay for them. I don't need a session, I just want answers. I want to talk to someone about what symptoms I have and find out how serious it is. Does anyone know where I could email or chat with a professional who can give me answers?

Answers:

I'm sorry, but I don't trust online sites that claim to be able to diagnose illnesses without seeing you face to face. These sites often contain inaccurate, and potentially dangerous information. I wouldn't even think of consulting an online doctor.

I wonder why you don't want to get your family involved? They should be the first people to turn to in times of need. You need to find someone you can trust and talk to them. Then ask them to go with you to see a doctor, who will be in a better position to help you.

Please don't be afraid to go and see your doctor - s/he won't tell your parents unless you're willing to let her /him (if s/he did, s/he would be committing a serious breach of confidentiality, which could lead to her/him being struck off). The doctor will merely suggest possible courses of action - you don't have to accept them.

Hope this helps!

wouldn't trust anyone online. you need to see a psychiatrist for a mental health check up for an accurate diagnosis and possible treatment. they need to see you and your responses as well as talk to you. i realize that you stated that you don't want to see anyone face to face but that is the best way to do it.

been there woth both a psychiatrist and a psychologist for talk therapy on a regular basis.

I don't know what country you are from, but if you are from the UK, you could try the NHS Direct phone service. They should be able to give you some indication of whether or not you are likely to have a mental health problem. Their phone number (from UK) is 0845 4647. You can also look them up online at nhsdirect.nhs.uk.

NHS Direct website.

I'm not a professional by any stretch. I have yet to get my psychology degree....

I really think going and meeting a therapist in person would be best. They could get to see the bigger picture: your input, body language, reactions to questions, etc much better than a community on Y!A can.

Please take the time to read this, it can only help:

You can contact a free clinic in your area and they can set up a phone interview or email consultation.

You need to tell us what YOU think what the mental illness is.
