Depression and college...?!

Question: Depression and college...?
I've always been a really good student: in high school, I got 2 As and 8 A*s in my GCSEs.
However, now I'm in college, I'm really struggling. I was diagnosed with depression in early November 2010, and this makes my moods swing dramatically and has ruined my concentration. I have a lot of problems at home and, among other things, I think that this is the cause of how I'm feeling.
I'm in my first year of college and am taking 5 AS Levels at the moment, and there is so mich work: each week I get at least 4 pieces of French homework alone.

I can't cope. I can't sleep properly, I'm stressed all the time... what should I do?

Answers:

i am bi-polar and i figured i would never make it in college with my non-sleeping, ups and downs; however, i went to my dr and he told me to see a psychiatrist who is better informed about my problems. i was given meds for sleep and for my bi-polar problems and everything was cleared up enough for me to get my A.A.S degree. i got good grades and i was proud of myself for going to college.

A.A.S dgree in law - enforcement and i used my degree for my chosen work.

As a student, do you have access to health and/or counselling services at college? I bet if you do, they would have seen people in your situation plenty of times. I found school a fair bit easier than tertiary study too, but maybe that is just me. Also, I found not getting too much caffeine, getting enough exercise and eating well and when I should, studying and spending social time with friends, doing part-time work and talking things over with friends and talking to lecturers and tutors for help when I was struggling helped me. Good luck. Try to stop, breathe, take one assignment at a time and remember that if you know you have honestly done your best, that is all you can do. Maybe the college people who know can help you re-assess how you are studying, if you have too big a load, show you where to get additional help and more resources, how to get medical consideration if that applies to you, and reassure you that you are not the lone ranger with this. Good luck, you will get through it and it doesn't mean you won't do well in the workforce just because you struggle at college (in fact, it might make you realise that there is more to learn and know than what you do in your courses, you learn from your mistakes and how to work through hard times etc.)
