Shyness, or Selective Mutism?!

Question: Shyness, or Selective Mutism?
Since I was little, I've always found it really difficult to speak anywhere in public - School is the worst.
If someone asks me something at school, I instantly clam up, and respond in the simplest way I can manage without being rude. People sometimes say things like 'What are you, a mute?' Or 'Why don't you speak?' And I can't reply. I can easily go through a day at school without speaking, apart from when I have to for the register; but I always dread that.
Whenever I'm with close friends or Family, I can speak normally though.
So, am I just horribly shy, Or a selective mute? :S

Answers:

It's not selective mutism. I had it when I was younger, and I just wouldn't speak to anyone except my family.
You might just have a general anxiety disorder, ask your doctor. It's nothing to be ashamed of, they can get you meds that help.

Moi.

I have never heard the term "selective mutism". I think you just have a bit of situational anxiety. The best way to get over it is exposure therapy - in other words put yourself into the situation that makes you uncomfortable, and after you're exposed to it enough it won't bother you as much. The anxiety will lessen with repetition.
