What exactly are "panic attacks"?!

Question: What exactly are "panic attacks"?
Thanks :)

Answers:

Panic attacks are sudden, intense episodes of anxiety. They may have a cause or trigger, or they may come out of nowhere. During a panic attack, a person could experience an elevated heart rate, shallow breathing, nausea, chest pain, numbness, trembling, alternating feelings of hot and cold, depersonalization (feeling like you're not real), derealizaton (feeling like everything around you isn't real), high blood pressure, lightheadedness, etc. They typically last a few minutes.

A part of a previous answer follows: Realise that although your conscious mind knows that death lies in the far distant future, the part of your brain which is conscious is like an iceberg, with the vast bulk of the subconscious mind supporting it.

Unfortunately, to the subconscious mind, everything is in the present tense - "NOW", so whenever you think about your ultimate demise, it considers it as an immediate threat to your continued existence, and may well deal with it in its usual manner, by activating the very ancient "fight or flight" response. It also is unable to deal with negatives well, if at all, so it's far better to learn to use positives when dealing with it. ~~~

The "fight or flight" response evolved many millions of years ago; the massive surge of adrenaline enabled short periods of speed and strength. It was a survival trait which is required little in modern life, but is implanted deep in the brain, and it needs specialised techniques to avoid, or cope with it.

I have a weblink that I believe may well provide further help, (about effective natural treatment for panic attacks) but if I include it here, this answer may be removed by Y!A for promoting a personal website with no direct relevance to the actual question asked, so email me if interested.

Panic attacks are like getting a huge wave of anxiety. People usually experience them differently, though most consist of faster breathing, racing thoughts, nausea, faster heart beat, shaking, feelings of impending doom, and dysphoria.

Look it up on wikipedia next time.
