I'm very depressed and suicidal...should I go to a mental hospital?!

Question: I'm very depressed and suicidal...should I go to a mental hospital?
I've had depression since I was 7 (I'm 17 now)
I've cut and overdosed since then A LOT! Recently I do it about 3 - 4 times a week, I also have drug, alcohol and eating disorder problems.
I starve, binge, purge, cut, cry and overdose on a regular basis.. I even eat loads of dairy products to punish myself (I'm dairy intolerant)
Councelling isn't helping, I skip college to drink and get high and now I'm on the verge of being kicked out. I also have insomia too....is a mental hospital the right option or should I just get antidepressants and other drugs to help?

Answers:

I really do think that would be the best option for you, you have so many problems that shouldn't be there because its clearly ruining your life and your collage carer! So please get some help, contact a mental hospital since counselling isn't working. Don't start off by getting antidepressants because you will become very reliant on them, so if the physiological way doesn't work then they will give you something. Good luck and I hope you get better

You say you're suicidal but don't actually say anything about killing yourself. Yes, if you feel that way you should go to hospital. You need to ask for a therapy called DBT (Dialectical Behavioural Therapy).

Do you have friends? .. Have jokes with them if you do, and start to make yourself happier. Otherwise I guess yes go to a mental hospital and try to get sorted.

Good luck :)

I would suggest that since you are aware that you can and have hurt your self, go to the E.R and they should be able to either suggest or admit you. My best to you.... Don't wait or put it off.

I have the same problem to with depression.

Please seek help :)

It sounds to me like you have an abuse history - most young people with behaviors like you were sexually abused or went thru severe emotional abuse. If you haven't worked on this in therapy, then you wouldn't be accomplishing much. It could be that your therapist is a poor match for you, also.

the drug and alcohol use are surely making your problems much worse.

given what you've written here, I think it would be a good idea to go inpatient. You should review your health coverage to see if inpatient mental health is covered. If it isn't, the hospital will probably not admit you unless it would be extremely negligent to let you go home. Or they may put you in a state hospital, which they can be very abusive. So do your homework first.

Otherwise, try to arrange for more help from your counselor - he/she may have an immidiate opening (other patients cancel and you can get on the list).

I find that intense exercise that tires me out will help if I am in a really bad way.

PS I agree with the DBT advice.

Please don't think of hurting yourself. Sounds like you need to pray --- it's important to know God, your spiritual Father, then pray about your life. He can help you live a better life. God doesn't want you to hurt yourself, but to know and follow God so you can have a good life. As God is love, life is primarily about love and relationships in order to have a rich and full life. Also, you need to know God's Son, Jesus Christ, in your life as your Lord and Savior as Jesus died on the cross as payment for our sins. Having Him with you will give you God's blessing and forgiveness, as you live God's way. We need to know and follow God in this life so we can go to heaven after we die, and so we can get God's help now. Not following God leads to hell, eternal suffering. Instead, there is an important prayer to pray to become a born again Christian. This prayer should be said with faith in God and a sincere heart:
"Dear God, I know that I am a sinful person and I don't want to be like this anymore. I know that Jesus Christ died on the cross as payment for our sins, and I want to accept Jesus Christ into my life as my Lord and Savior forever so I can receive God's forgiveness, guidance, and go to heaven after I die. Thank you, dear God, for your mercy and guidance; in Jesus' name. Amen."
After saying this prayer, you should check out a Christian church like Baptist, Catholic, Lutheran.
Also, get into their Bible study group so you can learn more about God, Jesus, and God's will for your life. The Bible is God's instruction book about how to live a God-honoring life so you can go to heaven after you die. The church can also get you baptized and prayed for. You can pray for yourself daily too. God guide your life.
A Christian church can pray for you if you call them, and if you need a prayer line in the USA, try this one which is toll-free for free prayer day and night --- phone: 1-877-247-2426.

Hi! You have had depression for a long time and you need to get help NOW. You may feel suicidal but you should realise that everyone is put on Earth to live their own life and that life is a gift. Do not throw it away. You need to see your doctor. They may put you on some antidepressants which will take a while to kick in (a few months) but may start working in a shorter time than that. Insomnia is a matter to be mentioned to your doctor too. This is a result of depression and all you are doing to harm yourself. Doctors can gauge whether you need tablets, hospital or both. As you are so depressed, a mental hospital may provide the help you need. Please see them, make that appointment and take the first step to a happier you. Mention your eating problems to them, they can give you support about this too. Your destructive habits need to stop and it is a good sign that you have taken this first step of realising that what you are doing is wrong and needs medical attention NOW. All the best, take care xxxxxxxx

yes! I've had so many of these problems (I'm 18) and I strongly believe you need to go and check yourself into a hospital, or tell a parent or teacher or even school counselor about this. These issues are serious, and you should go to a doctor. Anti-depressants could really help, and by seeing a mental physician they can prescribe you the best meds for your unique situation. Good luck <3

1-800-784-2433 This is Hopeline, a suicide hotline. They'll sit and talk with you all you want about any of your problems, if you ever feel like you want to hurt yourself in any way, please give them a call.

I think it's something you should consider. I have contemplated it quite a lot but have never gone, or been sent for that matter. But sometimes it can be the best until you become a little more stable. I don't really believe in medication but it has really helped some people and may help you. I think you should try and find another councellor if this one isn't working for you. With regards to the hospital, this is soley my opinion, I would consider it b/c you are basically giving everything up and are just allowed to concentrate on you. Sometimes I feel as though it would just be nice not to have to think for myself and be told when to get up, when to eat..etc....it just makes it easier if you know that all that is decided for you and you don't have to worry about it. Of course only short term after a while you want your freedom. But until you can get a bit more of a handle on stuff it may be a good idea. Plus they can put you on different meds and you can see which ones work best for you within the safety of the hospital. I hope that helps <3

not our problem
