will getting a short haircut help cure my trichotillomania?!

Question: Will getting a short haircut help cure my trichotillomania?
i used to have medium length hair, now it is cut up to my ears. i keep playing with the damaged ends and cannot stop. Back in september 2010, i had a hard core nervous breakdown and was diagnosed with severe depression, anxiety, trichotillomania, and OCD disorder. i keep insisting that i have knotty spots (above and around the ears and the nape of the neck). No, it is not headlice. That is actually what put me over the edge, i was convinced i had lice (back in the Fall) and used rid and nix almost every day, ive dumped bottles of 90% alchohol on my head and let it sit at least an hour, and for one month straight, i dyed my hair (which i NEVER do) once a week for a month. i have chemically destroyed my hair and as a result, i have about 2/3 of it starting to finally grow back, about about a 1/2 inch long. FYI - the trichotillomania existed for at least 3 months before my breakdown. I am heavily conditioning it w/masks, lotions, creams, oils and i just cant get rid of that broom like brittleness and split crunch ends, not to mention all the itching the new hair growth is causing. Ive also been using a hot cap on my head with masks at least once a day for 20-25 min. Should i be using a hot cap with as much damage has been done? Also,Im wondering if i went with a short cut,, to allow ALL the dead hair to get cut off, will it help me for pulling on my hair anymore. i love to play with the fuzzy, frizzy crunchy ends, in turn, im making it worse because there are times my brittle hair falls out so easily, i dont need to pull it for it to fall out. now i try to comb it instead.
Someone please help!

Answers:

You stated that you had a nervous breakdown last year. Have you told your doctor the severity of the trichotillomania you are currently experiencing and ask him to help you in treatment of this entity in your life? If not, you need to do it as soon as possible. You are harming yourself the longer you wait.

In regards to the response about cutting your hair to a short level, ask yourself. Is this actually going to help?

In order to get that answer, you will need to consult with your psychiatrist in order to get an answer that would be conducive to the situation in which you currently are experiencing.

This website is not the avenue in which to obtain an answer to the question you have proposed above. This is a query of which only your mental health professional would be able to answer for you.
