Depression and unexplained loss of appetite?!

Question: Depression and unexplained loss of appetite?
Hi! I'm an 18 year old girl, 5 foot 6 and I honestly have no idea what my weight is right now. Last time i checked which was about 6 months ago, I was around 190 pounds. But believe me, I'm not what you'd consider fat or unhealthy.

So for the past 5 or 6 months, I've been very depressed. Nothing suicidal, but I've been pretty reclusive, when normally I'm social and outgoing. As far as appetite goes, mine has been non-existent for the last 3-4 months. Normally when I'm in these slumps, I eat more, but now I can only stomach about 400-500 calories worth of food a day. My clothes are starting to fall off of me. But without access to a scale, I honestly have no idea where I am as far as weight, however, according to a tape measure, the inches are decreasing pretty steadily.

I try to select more nutrient dense stuff to make up for the difference, like whole milk, protein powder, and a lot of carb-rich food. Not a lot of meat products or sugary foods. Nothing I eat appears to affect my size, it's just the amount.

So I guess what I'm trying to ask is if my loss of appetite correlates with my depression, and should I seek medical attention to address the weight loss?

Answers:

There are many signs and symptoms of depression and changes in appetite is indeed one of them.
For some, they increase their intake and gain weight.
For others they lose their appetite and start to lose weight.
I think it would be beneficial to see a psychiatrist to address the depression issue. This will, in turn, help the appetite issue.
best wishes!!

yes it does correlate with you depression and you should talk to a psychologist about your feelings and open up,3-4 months not eating normally like you should AND being depressed for that long period of time, you should seek out help.

I would get counseling. It sounds like the depression is affecting your hunger.
