Wow! I identify with your sister's problem a lot. The difference is that I'm only 5'1 and weigh 180. Your sister has a great height for her weight, she doesn't look as bad as I currently look. Tell her to think about that for a moment. Now I have thyroid disease that was just diagnosed in November 2010. I started taking medicine in January 2011. Ever since I started taking the medicine my weight has been coming off at a fast pace, so it might be a good idea for her to visit her doctor, and have them take a look at the problem. I also workout 3x a week on my own and 2x a week with a trainer to speed up the process and to help tone my body. Also let her know that the more she stresses about it, the harder it will be for her to lose the weight, because stress causes weight gain. My diet consists in portion control and eating more proteins and less carbs. For example in the morning I would either have a protein shake or 3 egg whites with spinach and a glass of almond milk, or she can have half an english muffin with the eggs. For lunch I've been doing the lean cuisine that comes in a steam bag, with only 250 calories, and is just the right portion. At night I would have half a tuna sandwhich or tuna salad, or make sure is just something light, not heavy. No fast food! If she has sweet tooth or depending on her cravings, she can have a protein bar, I love the Kashi bars. There are also many 100 calorie snack packs, that can help her curve her cravings. Drink plenty of water, or she can try crystal light flavor pouches there are many choices, they even have some for craving control. Most important, she has to be serious, stick to it, and she will start seeing great results!!! Everything in life is accomplish with a little effort and sacrifice!! Good luck to you both!!!! (=

Well she shouldn't be stressed if it's a disease that runs in the family. That's like someone blaming themselves for having brown hair. She should try some healthy foods that still taste good. Also try to get her to do some sports. I'm not a nutrition expert so I don't know what exactly would be the best diet for her but eat healthy foods and don't snack between meals unless she's really hungry and if she is have an apple or somthing like it. Having a treat or unhealthy yet tasty food is ok once in a while but don't live on it:)

Lift weights, and do aerobics. This way she can eat about the same amount she does now, yet stay fit. The bonus is she will be energetic, and healthier.

The alternative is to spend her life swapping through one diet to another until she figures out that exercise is the way to go. Diets will only deprive her of energy, cause her to get depressed, and eventually gain more weight when she breaks off of them.

Get her to a gym, working out at home doesn't cut it for most people. If you really care, go with her.

Then it's probably best to start at the doctor's for a thryroid panel (bloodwork) run to make sure that isn't the cause of her weight problem.

I think she has psychological issues that need to be resolved before changes to her diet are made. Please follow up with a counselor.

Here are some tips:

Her craving aren't the bad part - ts the portion sizes that will really ruin her effort in trying to lose weight
If she wants chocolate, let her eat chocolate, but let her only eat a serving size or less

Also, don't let her use exercise as an excuse to eat - the point of exercise is to burn more calories than you consume

Have her make a 3 day chart of everything that she eats AND the portion size - this will help both you and her find out exactly what food is ruining her goal. Again make sure she is burning MORE than what she consumes.

Try replacing certain unhealthy ingredients in recipes with healthier substitutes - you can find a lot of these online (ex: frying with butter v.s. frying with olive oil)

Lastly, make sure when she is exercising she is not just walking for several minutes. She needs to actually push herself and get her heart rate up. She should not be trying to do spot exercises either because those do not work. Swimming is a GREAT sport - but again, make sure that she is not taking her sweet time moving like a snail. She needs to be sweating , feel physically hot, and not be able to speak a full sentence of words without breathing in the sentence after working out.
