My horrible fear of having surgery has gone too far. Can anyone help me get on w!

Question: My horrible fear of having surgery has gone too far. Can anyone help me get on with my life?
I never used to worry about this problem until only recently and i am so nervous i keep having dihhorreah etc.I have recently developed a sort of fear of surgery if it were to come to that someday (Im a little bit squeamish) is it really that bad? What is it like to be knocked out? Does an operation hurt? I am afraid of getting old and getting disease.
Here are some things that help me cope (are they good thinking strategies?)
- i am unlikely to need an operation
- operations wont hurt as i am knocked out
- i am fit and healthy
- i have my parents support
- my freinds have turned out fine
-i do not need an opration
-its always worse than it actually is

My worst fear is the tubing that gets inserted into your throat or whatever - i am scared incase it goes wrong and cuts my throat. Its all a bit icky

Also, i have never been knocked out before and i find the whole process a bit scary - the drip and the cold liquid running up my arm is so disguistig and icky - is it a nice feeling of being knocked out with drugs?
I dont wanna get myself into a negative state and just enjoy my life

Can anyone help me cure my horrible fear once and for all thx

Ok so I want to first off introduce myself. My name is Jason and no I'm not a surgeon however I have done/assisted in several surgeries. I have been the patient in a few. I am in the military (special operations) and have done trauma surgery in the worst of places that I can not mention. As far as "going to sleep" your not getting knocked out. The anesthetic that is used is very nice. You slowly just get sleepy like when you fall asleep watching tv. It's very cool actually and it's relaxing. If you have surgery you won't feel any pain. This is why the Docs go to school for so long to insure your safety and comfort. During the procedure in a normal routine case the Doc and rest of staff are usually so relaxed as well that they may play music to keep the mood up and light. You on the other hand are taking a nice nap and have lost any sense of time. You will wake up and probably be asking if they started yet or if your done. There should be nothing you have to worry about. Enjoy life and keep working out and staying healthy. Also sleep good knowing that we have some of the best medical practices in the world. So take a deep breath. Relax and know that it is not a bad experience if it needs to happen.

im not fearful of the surgery its self personally. its needles i hate! i hate those little devil pokers. and i am terrified of ever getting an iv =(

dont really have an answer but getting held down by my brother to get a shot always helped me get over me fear (not really) long enough to get 1 shot =(

Just live one day at a time, don`t worry about the future. Nobody can predict whats gonna happen. Just enjoy ur life, and you said you are healthy, right? As long as you`re healthy, you`ll be fine. Good luck!

Do not worry about it just don't eat 12 hrs before Ur surgery, that's the only procedure I had to follow... You just change and then they tell u the risk of Ur surgery and u just agree or disagree ask questions, then they take blood idk abt u but they took 2 full tubes I just didn't even look and then they give u anesthesia and you ll start feeling weak and sleepy and thirsty they can give u chips of ice... And then that's it whatever they do to you u Dnt feel or see and then u wake up in the recovery room and that's it you awake up and feel fine... They wnt stick nothing down Ur throat while Ur awake they did that to me when I was knocked out and I didnt even know i had to ask the doctor, but Ur family is there until Ur dead sleepy u wnt even notice or see when they leave.. Good luck on your surgery don't fear it will be over before you know it ;)

Doctors use Nitrous oxide to knock you out usually for small surgerys No2= ( whippits/ laughing gas) you will feel retarded for like 5 mins then you will wake up and be like " Did I already have surgery" , usually you don't even realize it's over until like 4 or 5 hours after it happened, and they medicate you up so much that it really wont hurt. Surgery is a routine procedure for certain things, and unless you need a transplant or something removed ( tumor) you really have no worries. Im scared of needles, I keep worrying that the needle will break in my vein and ill bleed out cause its hollow. But I thought to myself..... How often do I get shots for real.. like a few times ever in my life. It is a rare occurance that you will need some form of major surgery, so just think of it like... don't drink or do drugs and stay out of risky situations and you'll never hopefully need surgery.

The best way to overcome a fear is to become more familiar with it. Read stories of people who have gone through surgery. Your imagination focused on this is why you feel the fear. the less you think about it; the more you think about other things like becoming stronger, more flexible, and healthy, the more it won't mean a thing to you. Acceptance is another big way to overcome fear. In general to accept that ya, it could happen. I find it better helps prepare yourself and your mind. best wishes!! <3
