Has anyone ever heard of the Rosenhan experiment?!

Question: Has anyone ever heard of the Rosenhan experiment?

If so, what do you think of it?

Answers:

Yes, have heard of this and similar. It goes further than this though. There is an epidemic of Drs. automatically diagnosing and prescribing psychotropic drugs to people who are as normal as can be. Often just teens going through teen 'stuff'. They put pills down their throat instead of letting them know how normal they really are. There are a small minority of people who are seriously mentally ill and need the care of professionals. Other than that, in my opinion, very very few therapists actually know how to counsel and help someone and the whole thing is driven by the greed of big pharma.

I agree with Seth, and I did know about this experiment from a college psychology class. I also found when I was in a state hospital 5 years ago that nothing has changed-the nurses and docs never leave the glass cage and the low level staff are abusers. I did take careful notes, and two staff were disciplined.

Psychiatrists are very reluctant to change a diagnosis.

I never herd of the experiment, but I do think it is true, based on my experiences. I know that once a label is put on someone, no matter what the subject, anything that person says that someone doesn't agree with is "just their illness talking." Nothing they say is seen as credible.

Happens to me and my illness is mild.

I studied this briefly at university and absolutely fricken LOVED it. I could have spent a year studying the experiment quite happily.

I wonder what would happen if psychiatrists were to do that now. The results of the experiment were absolutely incredible and anybody with an interest in mental health, psychology or psychiatry should do a bit of reading on this.
