Freud and Object Relations Theory?!
Question: Freud and Object Relations Theory?
I know Freud started Drive Theory, but what was his connection to Object Relations? I was told that he does have some connection to it, and may have helped to start it.
Answers:
When Freud published "Mourning and Melancholia" in 1917, he brought forth the idea of anger turned in towards an internalized object representation. This was in the context of depression. Some people think that this was the beginning of Object Relations Theory even though Freud didn't go far with it. It was later developed by a number of famous clinicians. The British Object Relations school is the one usually referred to when speaking of it.
