Should you try and wake someone up from a night terror? And are they always caus!

Question: Should you try and wake someone up from a night terror? And are they always caused by trauma?
A few nights ago my boyfriend started whimpering a little bit in his sleep, which woke me up. I watched him to wake him up if it got any worse (this happens kind of often, but I usually don't have to wake him up) It progressed to the point he started yelling and thrashing and saying "Stop! Get away, leave me alone, no no no, you're hurting me." things like that, he sounded like a kid. I didn't want him to be in there anymore so I grabbed his wrist but he wouldn't wake up, I think it just freaked him out even more. I shook him pretty hard and he finally woke up crying a little bit. I tried to ask him what happened in the nightmare but he just went to the couch. The next morning he acted like nothing happened and we haven't talked about it. Are night terrors like that normal at 26? If it happens again should I wake him up again?

Answers:

my hubby is 31 and still has dreams like this. Some times I have to shake him a little, some times I have to almost shout at him while shaking him. But I don't suggest you grabbing him by the wrist. My hubby says that if he's saying things like "get away, you're hurting me" you grabbing him like that will make it "more real" to him in that dream that he's being attacked.I've known men and women in their 40's and 50's that STILL have nightmares/terrors,so I don't think it's about being "normal" really. And as far as him not wanting to talk about it, ya gotta remember, HE'S A GUY! He probably did really just brush it off the next day because it wasn't a big deal to him. Just be there to wake him when he needs you to and if it's bothering him too bad, I'm sure he'll ask you for help. Just keep the love going! Good luck to ya both!

With night terrors, you shouldn't wake that person up- it actually makes it worse for them. And yes, they're caused by trauma.
