Best friend is bipolar/depressed and has outbursts, don't know how to deal?!

Question: Best friend is bipolar/depressed and has outbursts, don't know how to deal?
She's been my friend since 2002. I love her to death. We were roommates when we were in school together, we are both married now and have a kid. She was diagnosed last year with bipolar and depression. Well 2 nights ago she drove 8 hours to my city to talk to me. She left her kid and husband and took off, ignored all her husbands calls, he was freaking out, calling me and asking where my friend was. She showed up at my door, she looked so pale and shaky and skinny. I was so scared because I never seen her like this. She told me she couldn't take it anymore and wanted to die. She showed me all her cuts on her arms, she was crying and tripping and telling me she separated from her husband. I let her spend the night of course and the next morning. She woke up in a great mood. We ate breakfast and were hanging out and my neighbor came by to drop off something and I introduced my friend to my neighbor. we were talking for at least 3 or 4 minutes when my friend decides she wants to let her feelings out and talk about her life and how she was raped when she was little. I never had heard that come out of her mouth in the 9 years I've known her!!!! I was shocked. She began to tell me and my neighbor she was raped by her cousin when she was 13 and her exboyfriend tried to kill her twice. I never in all the years I've known her heard this information about her. So I asked my neighbor to please excuse us and she left. So I confronted my best friend after my neighbor left. I asked her why did you say all those things, do you want to talk about it? My friend gave me the most evil look and told me I'm naive and live in la la land and was brought up by religious fanatics and I was stupid and will never understand where she's coming from. I was deeply insulted. I never did anything wrong to her. This is not the first time she's done this. She did this last year, drove to my house (8 hours mind you) to talk crap to me. I don't get where she's coming from at all, I'm only trying to help her, but everything I say she twists it around and calls me all kinds of names. It's like she hates me for not experiencing the same circumstances she went thru growing up. Well, my question is how to deal with this person as a friend? She's been acting this way since early 2010. Please all answers will be greatly appreciated!

Wow, we have a family friend, that is just like that. the docs shocked her and that helped, but she lost short term memory from it. She is taking her meds and has to change often, but they are helping. When she is over the edge, she wants to die and took a bottle of adivan, but when it started to level her out she didn't want to die anymore and called for help. I just went and stayed with her for 2 months. I just came back and thought I needed meds. If I was her I would want to be dead, It was hell living with her. UP and DOWN, it was just crazy, Your friend should not be around her child. She should be put in a psych unit to be evaluated. Our friends brother is in the same thing now and she took him to the hospital for his suicide attempt and now she has him at her house, so they can take turns with the suicide runs. I didn't see any help from me for her, Just glad to be out of there. You help and they are mad, you don't help and they are mad. Get her help and walk away and tell her husband to keep her away from the child. The Shocks did help, but has to be repeated every few months. It really sounds bad, until you lived it.....

1. Get information on these diseases. Websites, books, etc. etc. etc. Information is knowledge. Knowing what she's going through with these diseases can help you cope and maybe help her cope her, too.

2. Encourage her to get professional help. Therapy, medication, whatever.
