why can't i EVER sleep?!

Question: Why can't i EVER sleep?
for as long as i can remember i've had difficulty sleeping. when i was a sophomore in high school (4-5 years ago) my dr. put me on trazodone. that seemed to help for a while but then my body got used to it and i fell back into that same pattern... it's been that way ever since.

and when i do fall asleep, it's not until 3 or 4 am....here it is NOW almost 4 am...

how can i fix this? what should i do?

thanks

Unless you have a deep disorder of the brain to sleep. Most if not all living things have what they call a Circadian rhythm. So to take advantage of that. You MUST try to keep a rigid schedule. Eat time, play time, sleep time..period.

You cannot change from one day to another your schedule.

So once you've conquered your schedule disruptions here are couple of other things you can do.
1. do NOT sit in front of a laptop, computer, iPod, iPhone, iPad any artificial lighting. this includes the new CFL lighting and LED lighting. They are too close to producing the full spectrum which keeps you awake. Unfortunately this includes HDTV's hours before bed.
2. No coffee/tea/soda/candy.. anything super sweet or heavy on caffeine 4hrs before your sleep time.
3. Reduce your thinking and physical movements to a minimum.
4. Take Melatonin..only takes 3mg in 1hr to produce that first yawn... and at that frist yawn.. go straight to bed!
5. get ready for bed hours before bed time... that last minute brushing your teeth, washing your face, shower etc... all will WAKE you up.. so be in your pj's and ready for bed including your bed ready to sleep in 3-4hrs before bed time.
6. No active conversations, emotional thinking.
7. could read a book in bed but as soon as you feel sleepy.. turn off light and sleep!

good luck,

Do you exercise on a regular basis? That might help make you tired earlier at night. And what time do you wake up? Some people don't require a lot of sleep to be fully awake, but if you're young, you should try to since your body does a lot of "recovering" from the day while you sleep.

Maybe help make your bedroom a more sleep friendly environment. Turn off all lighted electronics, make sure no light is coming through your window and don't have any TVs or computers (anything distracting) in your room that would make it hard to sleep.

It might be a neurological problem, but if it's not, you should get yourself tired before bed time (exercise). Remove all distractions: TV, internet etc. Make sure you open the window, let some air in, oh...and don't eat right before sleeping. Hope that helps.
