I don't think they can. Self harm is an addiction, one that is very hard to get ride of. A person really has to want to stop to be able to stop, if your trying to convince your friend to stop, but they wont have any of it, I suggest, if it's not very bad wait for them to realize they have a problem, and just generally be their for them. Or if it's really bad and you think they might be endangering their lives, you should tell a school consoler, or some how try to get help for them, they might initially be mad at you for it, but they wont even have a chance to forgive you if you don't and they cut to deep, or get an infection.

it's like any addicition, you have to find the root cause of the problem before you can treat it effectively. i used to self harm to from 7-18 but i managed to stop it was hard but i knew i had to do it 1 for my family and 2 to stop me being admitted into a psych ward!!!!

the only person that cam make them stop there's nothing you can do but Support them soz
